How To Split Your Screen 50/50 on A Chromebook

Multi tasking on the Chromebook has never been easier, but thanks to the Split Screen features. In this article, we’ll take you through different ways of how you can split the screen on your Chromebook to help accommodate two apps simultaneously.

Method 1: From the Overview of The Screen

The F5 spot that is on your keyboard is the show windows key. When you press the button it will display the Chrome Overview mode where you can find all open windows, apps and the desktops on your Chromebook. Your apps can be moved into a multi-window setup from the overview of the screen. Let’s see how this is done.

1. Launch the apps that you want to use in split-screen mode.

2. Press the "Show windows" button (it’s located at the F5 spot of your keyboard) on your Chromebook’s keyboard.

Alternatively, you can just swipe-up three fingers on the touchpad. You should see a list of all the active applications there.

3. Drag one of the apps to one side of the screen that reads "Drag here to split screen".

Move the first/primary app either to the right side or left edge of the screen; as your choice may be.

4. Afterward, also drag the second app to the free other space on the side of your Chromebook’s display.

Method 2: Drag and Drop

The Drag and Drop is another quick way to organize two apps in a setup called the "side-by-side" on your Chromebook. Now follow the instructions below.

1. First, click and drag the title bar of the first app to the left or right edge of your Chromebook’s display. Just release the app when you see a transparent highlight that occupies only 50% of the screen.

That should automatically dock the app into either the right or left half side of the screen, depending on the side you dragged the app.

2. Now launch the second app and drag it by the title bar into the screen section that is unoccupied.

It wont be appropriate if it covers the whole screen. So if the app occupies the full screen, just tap the Minimize icon to resize the app window. Otherwise, you may not be able to drag the app into a split screen setup.

3. You can release the window when the transparent highlight covers the section you want to place the app on.

The both apps should be docked side-by-side, with each taking up 50% screen space.

Method 3: Use the Restore or Maximize Button

The Maximize or Restore does not only modify the size of a window, but it can be also used in the positioning or re-positioning of the apps into a Split Screen arrangement on ChromeOS.

1. On the first app window, simply tap and hold the Restore/Maximize icon.

2. You would see two arrows that are to the right and the left side of the icon. While you are holding the Maximize icon, move your cursor to the arrow facing to dock the app to the left half of your screen. Alternatively, just move the cursor to the right-facing arrow to send the app to the right half side of the screen.

3. Launch the 2nd app and then repeat the process as done earlier to send the window to the other half of your Chromebook.
