How to turn an android phone into a universal remote control

The smartphone, without a doubt, possesses exceptional intelligence. Although it will take a very intelligent person to discover and properly utilize all of its applications, this will not be a problem for most people. Using your phone as a remote controller is one of the truly innovative things your phone can do, but it's possible you weren't aware of this feature. Continue reading if you're interested in learning how to turn your Android phone into a universal remote control.

To begin, you must have a device that is compatible with infrared remotes, such as a Smart TV, as well as an Android phone that is capable of performing the necessary tasks. This is something you will learn more about as you proceed through the text.

Use your built-in Infrared (IR) Blaster

What is an infrared blaster and how does it work? This piece of hardware allows you to send commands from your phone and have them converted into infrared rays or signals that can be used to control another device, such as a television, DVD player or stereo that supports infrared remotes. This is the critical component that allows the Android phone to be transformed into a universal remote control device.

Because the hardware cannot be downloaded, your phone must either have it or not have it in order to function properly. If your device is equipped with it, you can then go to the Google Play store and download and install an app that is compatible with it. For those who don't have one, you can purchase a "IR blaster" device from online retailers such as Amazon and eBay.

In order to determine whether your device is equipped with an infrared blaster;

  • Opening Google Play on your device and searching for IR test > will bring you to this page. Install the software > Allow a minute for installation, and then tap the screen to open it.
  • The program will analyze your device and inform you whether it contains an infrared blaster or not once it has been opened.

Here's how to quickly and easily install an infrared blaster on an Android phone or tablet.

  • On your device, go to the Google Play Store and type in "IR blaster" in the search bar.
  • Look through the available mobile remote apps and select one that has received positive reviews and ratings as well as being compatible with your device (see Resources). There are a plethora of free and paid apps available, some of which are specific to a particular brand. Make sure to read the description of the app before installing it.
  • Download it and then run the application.
  • When prompted, select your IR blaster from the drop-down menu (you only have to do this the first time you use it)
  • Comply with all prompts and grant permissions when requested.
  • Go to the manufacturer's website and choose the model that you want to be able to control remotely. The vast majority of apps include an integrated list of supported audio and video devices from which you can choose your preferred device.
  • If you're using an app, you may be prompted to enter a component's universal code, which will vary depending on the app. A remote control's programming manual will contain groups of codes for various branded devices; alternatively, you can conduct an online search for the codes for your specific device. If you have a remote control with a programming manual, consult it for the codes for your device.
  • Your app will display instructions on how to connect your device to the app after you have selected your model.
  • The android phone will then function as a universal remote, allowing you to control all of your devices with a single tap after the setup is complete. By pressing the power button, you will be able to begin testing the functions.

Make use of the Simple Universal Television Remote

In comparison to other remote TV apps, the Universal remote app for Android is considered a bit easier to use; however, the app is not compatible with all phones. When used in conjunction with compatible devices, it can be used to transform an Android phone into a universal remote control.

  • Go to the Google Play Store and type in "Easy Universal TV Remote" to find the app.
  • To access the WiFi settings menu, go to Settings > WiFi > and choose IR port, IR Blaster, or WiFi from the list of available options.
  • Enter the IP address of your Smart TV and confirm that it is connected to the same WiFi network as your computer > Select a brand of television and configure it from the list that appears.
  • Check the signal strength of your Android device's WIFI connection.
  • Turn on the television by using the Power IR - Universal Remote Control application or the original plastic remote control. Remote
  • You're comfortable with the idea of using your phone as a remote control for your television.

Make use of an external device to pair your devices

The majority of universal remote options are only available for iPhones, despite the fact that an external pairing device may be able to transform an Android phone into a universal remote. However, the Logitech Harmony Hub, which works with both Android and Apple devices and allows for connection via IR, Bluetooth, or WiFi, is a popular alternative that is worth considering. Before you can start, you must first purchase the hardware from an online retailer like Amazon.

However, the procedure may differ slightly depending on the phone, but the following are the general guidelines.

  • Connect the micro USB charging cable from your device to the hub's back panel using the included connector. Give the computer 30 to 1 minute to fully boot up before using it.
  • The Harmony application can be found in the Google Play Store by searching for it. Installing and running the application are the next steps.
  • Select "Create New Hub" from the drop-down menu. Select the WiFi network to which the Hub should be connected by clicking on it > the WiFi security key must be entered
  • Enter your Harmony login information or create a new account.
  • It's best to select "Add as new remote" if this is your first time using the remote.
  • The hub will be able to identify devices that respond to Internet Protocol commands. To add additional devices, select "Add Device" from the drop-down menu and enter the Manufacturer's Name and Model Number.
  • The app will suggest that you create specific activities involving the devices that you've added to your account. Take a look at them and make your decision. Creating activities that allow you to control multiple devices from a single interface is possible. Examples of such activities include switching between channels, navigating, and adjusting the volume.
  • A harmony hub, which can also function as a television remote control for your Android phone, is an excellent choice if you want to be able to control your air conditioner from your phone. The device is, however, incompatible with a number of smart home gadgets.

If you're looking for a way to control your TV without having to use WiFi, Bluetooth can be used in lieu of WiFi in some situations.

Utilize manufacturer apps

There are a couple of manufacturer apps available that allow you to turn your Android phone into a universal remote control for various devices. Companies such as LG, Samsung, and Sony may have developed their own proprietary apps that do not require the use of infrared (IR). In this case, both your home device and your phone must be from the same manufacturer.

  • Note that your phone and the appliances must both be connected to the same WiFi network in order for this to work.
  • Aside from that, you'll need to download a separate app for each device that you want to be able to control remotely. Apps that are compatible with your manufacturer or brand should be sought.
  • A universal remote does not have the capability of integrating all of the apps.

Make use of an infrared adapter

This is also referred to as an IR adapter, and it is the more common solution for devices that do not have an IR blaster, such as iPhones and iPads, and other similar devices. Android phones, on the other hand, are exempt from this rule.
