MTN Nigeria claims that the nationwide service outage is the result of a problem with the company's core networking infrastructure

A statement from MTN Nigeria, the country's largest mobile network operator, stated that a disruption in the company's core network was responsible for the nationwide service outage that affected its subscribers on Saturday, October 9, 2021.

South African-owned MTN Nigeria is the country's largest telecommunications provider, with an estimated 71 million subscribers by 2020, according to the company. Subscribers were unable to make calls or access data-enabled services for approximately six hours during this time.

In an explanation provided by Olutokun Toriola, MTN's chief executive officer, the company's technical team was successful in resolving the issue. Additionally, he expressed his condolences to all MTN customers who had been inconvenienced and reaffirmed the company's commitment to providing dependable service.

In telecommunications, the core network, also known as the backbone network, is a high-capacity communication infrastructure. Providing services to customers connected through the access network is the most important part of a telecommunications company's network, and it is its focal point.

The core network that has been impacted is responsible for providing subscribers with access to voice and data services, among other things. Additional functions performed by the mobile core network include storing subscriber profile information, determining the subscriber's geographic location, and authenticating services.

Telecommunications service providers, for the most part, own and operate their own core networks, which are typically interconnected. Furthermore, certain large organizations have their own networks, which are typically connected to public networks through which they operate.

The mobile core network in advanced countries has undergone significant evolution over the years, progressing from 2G to 3G to 4G and 5G. It has had an impact on them because of the disruptions caused by problems in the core network infrastructure.

Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), Internet Protocol (IP), synchronous optical networking (SONET), and dense wavelength division multiplexing are among the network and data link layer technologies that are used as core facilities (DWDM).

The CEO also stated that the company's team was working with network partners Ericsson and Cisco to ensure that such disruptions did not recur.
