Secret Netflix codes: Use this hidden trick to make the streaming algorithm work for you

Netflix has an abundance of television shows, films, and documentaries. Whatever you can think of, it's probably available on the streaming service's massive library. Not to mention Netflix's growing collection of binge-worthy original series such as Bridgerton, Stranger Things, The Crown, Shadow and Bone, and Mindhunter. With an almost infinite selection of content to choose from, it's easy to spend more time scrolling through recommendations than watching something.

Netflix utilizes algorithms to assist subscribers in sorting through their options by highlighting TV shows and films that you may enjoy based on your profile and previous viewing history. However, your tastes may be more refined than those of trending titles, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, anime, or award-winners. Netflix's recommendation algorithm may have buried the perfect movie or show based on what you've watched. If this is the case, Netflix codes can assist you in sorting through the deluge of content to discover more interesting recommendations than the standard fare.

What you should understand about Netflix codes

Although not a new discovery, Netflix codes are based on a number system used by the service to categorize films and television shows by genre and subgenre. Take note that the codes are only valid on the Netflix website, not on the Netflix mobile apps.

Where to find Netflix codes

For a complete list, visit netflix-codes.com. There are approximately twenty categories, including anime, foreign films, and classic films. These categories are further subdivided into more narrowly defined subgenres. For instance, the code 8711 for horror films contains 12 additional codes such as deep-sea horror films, zombie horror films, and teen screams.

How to use Netflix codes

The simplest method is to install the Better Browse for Netflix Chrome extension. This is how:

  1. Navigate to the Chrome Web Store and type "Better Browse for Netflix" into the search bar.
  2. Click the Add to Chrome button.
  3. Select the Add Extension option.
  4. Open a new tab and sign into your Netflix account.
  5. At the top of the Netflix home screen, next to My List, you should see a new option — Browse All. Click that to conduct a manual search or to scroll through the available subgenres.

Another option is to access Netflix codes via the Netflix codes website. This is how:

  1. Open your PC or mobile browser and navigate to netflix-codes.com.
  2. Determine the genre or subgenre you wish to investigate.
  3. Tap the code next to the desired genre or subgenre.
  4. If you're using a device that comes pre-installed with the Netflix app, the app should open and take you directly to the genre or subgenre you selected. If you don't have the app installed, it will open Netflix in your browser and allow you to view the available movies and shows.
  5. Select the title you wish to view.

You can also manually enter the Netflix codes in your browser. This is how:

  1. Open your PC or mobile browser and navigate to netflix-codes.com.
  2. Determine the genre or subgenre you wish to investigate.
  3. In a new tab, type http://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/INSERTNUMBER>, replacing INSERTNUMBER with the genre or subgenre code for the film.
  4. You'll be directed to Netflix, where you can browse the titles available in that category.

From there, you can either mentally note the movie you want to watch and return to the app on your preferred device, or you can log in and watch in your browser.
