A new report from sensor tower shows that the most popular apps on both the App Store and Google Play store in the third quarter of 2021 were TikTok and PUBG Mobile. TikTok is the most popular social media app, while PUBG Mobile is the most popular video game.

According to reports, both apps received the greatest number of downloads in their respective categories. According to the report, consumer spending on the TikTok app increased by 41 percent year-on-year (YoY) in 2015. Consumer spending in PUBG Mobile increased by 11 percent year on year in the third quarter, according to reports.
Consumer spending on in-app purchases, premium apps, and subscriptions increased 15.1 percent year on year to $33.6 billion (roughly Rs. 2,49,013 crores) in the third quarter of 2021, according to Sensor Tower's latest report on app spending in the third quarter of 2021. Google Play, which saw consumer spending increase 18.6 percent year on year to $12.1 billion, was the driving force behind the increase (roughly Rs. 89,674 crores). While growth on the App Store was modest, consumer spending increased, reaching $21.5 billion (roughly Rs. 1,59,382 crores) in the first quarter of this year, representing a 13.2 percent year-on-year increase.
According to Sensor Tower data, TikTok was the highest-earning app overall in the third quarter of this year. Overall, Piccoma, a manga reader, came in second place with revenue reportedly increasing by 130 percent year on year, followed by YouTube, which saw consumer spending increase by 17 percent year on year. In the top five highest-earning apps, Google One and Disney+ rounded out the top four and five spots on the list, respectively. Although TikTok was the highest-grossing app overall and on the App Store, Google One was the highest-grossing app on the Google Play store, outpacing the competition.

According to Sensor Tower, TikTok was also the most downloaded app in the world in the third quarter of 2021, ahead of Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger, among others. TikTok recently passed the 3 billion install mark worldwide, making it the first non-Facebook application to do so.
Consumer spending on mobile games has continued to rise, and according to Sensor Tower, PUBG Mobile (which includes the Chinese localisation Game for Peace) has risen to the top of the charts in the category. Consumer spending in PUBG Mobile increased by 11 percent year on year in the third quarter, according to reports. Following PUBG Mobile in the top-grossing games for the third quarter of 2021, Honor of Kings from Tencent and miHoYo's smash hit Genshin Impact ranked second and third, respectively. Consumer spending on Niantic's Pokémon Go and Roblox Corp's Roblox rounded out the top five, according to Sensor Tower, with Pokémon Go experiencing an 8 percent year-over-year decline and Roblox experiencing a 9 percent increase when compared to Q3 2020.
According to the report, first-time installs of mobile games were down compared to the same period the previous year, falling 3.5 percent to 13.6 billion across both stores from 14.1 billion in the previous year's period. Additionally, PUBG Mobile was the most downloaded mobile game worldwide, followed by Outfit7's recently launched My Talking Angela 2 (which was the third most downloaded game worldwide). Game titles such as Subway Surfers by Sybo Games, Count Masters by Tap2Play, and Garena's battle royale game Garena Free Fire rounded out the top five most-installed games worldwide.
