Ukraine accuses Russia of being behind recent cyber-attacks on dozens of official websites

Ukraine's government blamed Russia on Friday for cyberattacks on hundreds of its official websites, according to a statement.

In a brief period of time, approximately 70 government websites were brought down as a result of the attack, which was the largest in Ukraine in four years.

The day before the websites were deactivated, a message flashed across the screen, warning Ukrainians to "prepare for the worst." The vast majority of sites reopened within a few hours of the initial closure.

The United States and NATO have condemned the incident and reaffirmed their commitment to the Ukrainian people and government. The Russian government has remained deafeningly silent in the wake of the hacking.

According to Ukraine's information ministry, a timeline detailing the spread of information about the incident was released, noting that Russian media was the first to report the story.

They claimed the assaults were in retaliation for what they perceived to be Russia's failure in recent talks with the United States and the European Union (NATO) on Ukraine.

Following the strike, the White House stated that it will provide Ukraine with whatever assistance it requires in order to recover.

It is still unclear whether or not the Russians were behind the strikes in question. Cyber reporter and expert Joe Tidy believes that the attacks were more of a coordinated effort by patriotic Russian hackers than they were a Kremlin-directed cyber-offensive, according to a report by the BBC.
