Users can now tip their favorite creators on Twitter by using Chipper tags
A new feature has been added to the microblogging website Twitter that allows users to tip their favorite creators on the website using Bitcoin as a form of payment.
In a press release issued earlier this week, the social media giant stated that its Tips feature, which will now be available worldwide, will enable users to monetize their content on the platform by posting a link to their Bitcoin wallet directly into their Twitter profile.
Twitter will become the first social media network to openly encourage the use of cryptocurrency as a method of payment as a result of this new feature that is currently being implemented. This feature, according to the company, will not only allow users to connect their crypto wallets to their social profiles, but it will also serve to authenticate the ownership of NFTs, as they will tweet with a special badge to prove ownership.
Originally introduced as a test feature in May, tipping is now a permanent feature that allows users to earn money by recommending content to their followers. It is now possible for users of iOS devices around the world to send and receive digital payments using this feature. Android users will be able to take advantage of the feature starting next week.
Twitter recognizes that Bitcoin and non-fiat currencies (NFTs) are not going away anytime soon and has decided to openly embrace these options on its platform. Because Twitter's CEO and billionaire, Jack Dorsey, has also been a vocal supporter of bitcoin and owns a digital payment service called Square, the integration of Bitcoin into Twitter is hardly surprising at this point. Square allows users to buy and sell bitcoins with their credit cards.
Rather than directly facilitating bitcoin Tip transactions, the social media company will do so through a list of payment services that will be made available through its App.
In addition to Chipper, an African fintech company that allows users on the African continent to invest in cryptocurrencies, there are a number of other payment services that are currently integrated with this TIP feature. It also makes it possible to send airtime and data as well as make instant money transfers.
Currently, the company provides services to seven African countries, including Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda, as well as the United Arab Emirates. The company does not take a cut of any money that is sent, and it has promised to add some new services to the list in the near future.
According to a Twitter blog post, in addition to the services that are currently available through Tips, users in El Salvador and the United States, with the exception of residents of New York and Hawaii, will be able to send and receive Bitcoin Tips seamlessly using Strike, a Bitcoin wallet application that is based on the Lightning Network technology.
At the same time that the social media company is preparing to launch a creator fund for users who host live audio events on Spaces, this tip feature will be available. The company anticipates that the creator fund will encourage creators to host live audio events on Twitter as a result of the fund.
In addition to blockchain, the company has stated that it intends to test new methods of ensuring that its users have a safer experience while using the app. It intends to test features that alert users when they are entering a "heated" conversation and that allow them to leave tweet threads that they no longer wish to be a part of.
