5 Must-Have Tools If You Want To Grout Like Pro

Have you ever stood before a tiling project and wondered how to make your grout lines as perfect and beautiful as those in home improvement magazines? You are not alone. Grouting can be messy, but you can tackle it like a pro with the right tools.

As you begin your next tiling project, remember these are more than just accessories to the task; they're your partners in getting a flawless finish. With the right tools, you can transform your tile installations into stunning artwork that stands the test of time.

If you're ready to improve your tiling skills, let's explore the five essential tools to turn your grouting game from amateur hour into pro results right out of the box.

1.Grout Scrubber

Imagine you're on your hands and knees, scrubbing dry grout off those beautiful new tiles with an old toothbrush. Sounds like a nightmare, right? That's where a grout scrubber comes in handy to save the day and your back.

A grout scrubber is one of those tools that are not often mentioned yet play the role of an unsung hero when it comes to grouting. It comprises stiff bristles that reach into the tiny, tight areas between the tiles. Think of it as a toothbrush superhero, solely invented to do the things it does.

Go for long-handed models that can save you from all that stooping, making the job much more comfortable.

But here's a pro tip: Don't go for the cheapest option. A quality grout scrubber will last much longer and make your life much easier. Trust us: your future self will thank you when you're not replacing worn-out brushes with every other project.

2.Rubber Float

Right after working with the grout, the rubber float is next up. When it comes time to spread grout evenly across a tiled surface, it will be your best buddy. It's like a squeegee for your grout, helping you push that mixture into every nook and cranny.

While shopping for the rubber float, look for one with a comfortable grip. You will hold this tool for some time, so comfort is paramount. The rubber blade should be firm but flexible to apply appropriate pressure as you work.

Using a rubber float at first feels quite awkward, but once you get the hang of it, you will be amazed at how quickly and effectively you can cover large areas. Remember to work small areas at a time and keep your float at a 45-degree angle to the tile surface.

3.Sponge (But Not Just Any Sponge)

Now, you might be thinking, "A sponge? Really? Is that a must-have tool?" But here is the thing. Unlike regular sponges, grout sponges are more absorbent and durable, allowing you to work more efficiently.

When it comes to grouting, not all sponges are created equal. You want a big, tight-grained sponge made explicitly for grout work. These sponges are usually made of cellulose or hydrophilic foam. They are very absorbent and slightly rough, so they are excellent for removing excess grout from your tiles without damaging or piquing the grout line.

The real art lies in working with the grout sponge. It should be kept plentifully in clean water, wrung out on the tile face until damp but not soaking, and lightly swept in circles. Patience and calm go a long way here, as working too fast creates uneven grout lines and messy finishes.

4.Grout Sealer Applicator

Once your grout has dried and cured (check the manufacturer's instructions for timing), it's time to seal it. This is a crucial step, as you want to protect all that hard work from being ruined by stains and moisture. A grout sealer applicator would be an excellent tool for this.

They come in different styles—simple brush-ons, roller applicators, and spray bottles. The type you choose will depend on the size of your project and your personal preference. A brush-on applicator will give you more control on smaller jobs, while a roller can speed things up for larger areas.

Although the grout sealer applicator isn't rocket science, you will still need a steady hand and, in some cases, attention to detail. Take your time as you cover the grout lines, ensuring equal coverage. Oh, and to the point: when working with sealers, you need good ventilation in your workspace. Your nose will thank you later.

5.Grout Saw or Grout Removal Tool

Last but not least on our list is the grout saw or grout removal tool.

You may already be wondering why you must remove grout when installing it. Well, grouting doesn't always involve new installations. Quite often, you repair or replace old, damaged grout.

A grout saw is a hand-held tool with a blade expressly made to remove old grout without damaging the tile around it. You may think of it as a small chainsaw for your grout joints. Some grout saws are manual, and some are electric for the bigger jobs.

Using a grout saw takes a bit of practice and a steady hand, so take it easy and work your way along the grout lines, applying even pressure. It is not a race, so avoid scratching your tiles.

Conclusion

Grouting like a professional requires competence and the right tools. Every tool in your grouting kit will contribute to applying, shaping, sealing, and protecting your work with grout.

With the backing of a good-quality float, grout sponge, grout saw, grout sealant applicator, and grout scrubber, you are well-equipped to face any grouting work with confidence and precision.

So gear up and get ready to grout like a pro!
