business .

Kampala — Airtel Mobile Commerce Uganda Limited (AMCUL) has successfully concluded its three-month nationwide rewards campaign, Vroomula Amajja, an initiative aimed at rewarding Airtel Money customers and agents while fostering the transition to a cashless economy in Uganda.

Launched in July, the Vroomula Amajja campaign was designed to recognize the loyalty of Airtel customers and enhance financial inclusion across the nation. Throughout the campaign, participants had the opportunity to win various prizes daily, weekly, and monthly, including cash rewards, motorbikes, and the grand prize of a brand-new 2024 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, all aimed at incentivizing engagement with digital financial services.

Japhet Aritho, Managing Director of Airtel Money, expressed his enthusiasm at the culmination of the Vroomula Amajja campaign, stating, “Today marks a milestone in Uganda’s journey towards financial inclusion. Over the past 90 days, our Vroomula Amajja campaign has not just changed lives—it has revolutionized how Ugandans think about digital transactions.” He further noted that the campaign was launched with a clear vision: to reward loyal customers and accelerate Uganda’s shift to a cashless economy, remarking that the results have exceeded their expectations.

The campaign has disbursed over UGX 1.5 billion in rewards, benefiting more than 6,000 participants during its duration. Notably, the grand prize draw awarded one fortunate winner a brand-new 2024 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. In addition to this, 4,050 customers won digital cash prizes, 117 customers received motorbikes, while 585 agents were recognized for their contributions to increasing transaction volumes, and another 585 merchants were honored for promoting digital payments throughout the country.

The real success of the Vroomula Amajja campaign is reflected not just in the statistics but in the significant increase in digital transactions, with more Ugandans embracing Airtel Money for a variety of everyday needs, from utility payments to merchant transactions. Aritho emphasized, “The true success lies beyond these numbers. We’ve seen an unprecedented surge in digital transactions, with more Ugandans than ever embracing Airtel Money for their daily needs.”

One of the standout moments of the campaign was the announcement of Charles Muwonge, a car mechanic from Wakiso, as the winner of the grand prize. Muwonge expressed his gratitude, stating, “I am so happy and delighted to win this vehicle. My heart skipped a beat when I heard my name, and I am so grateful to Airtel Money for thinking about us and giving back to its customers.”

The UCC Market Performance Report for Q4 FY 2023/24 (April-June 2024) reveals a significant uptick in mobile activity, reporting 38.5 million active mobile subscriptions and 44.2 million mobile money registrations. The report also noted an increase in mobile money transactions, rising to 1.84 billion from the previous quarter’s 1.72 billion, indicating a growing acceptance of mobile money services across the nation.

According to Aritho, the success of Airtel Money is backed by a robust and reliable 5G network that is continually optimized to meet the evolving needs of its customers, ensuring instant, secure, and borderless transactions. He commended the Bank of Uganda for fostering an enabling environment for financial services and for its commitment to national financial inclusion, which has opened significant opportunities for providers like AMCUL to extend their services to the unbanked population through mobile financial solutions.

Aritho concluded, “With the continued uptake of mobile financial services highlighted by the UCC market report, we are poised to expand our reach and impact in Uganda’s financial landscape, ensuring that our services are accessible to all.”
