Chad Seeks Internet Solutions from Western Neighbors Following Extended Blackout

Officials in Chad are taking decisive action to connect the central African country to a regional fiber-optic network, following significant internet disruptions caused by flooding in neighboring Cameroon. This internet blackout, which has persisted for over ten days, has severely affected daily operations in Chad, highlighting the vulnerabilities in its digital infrastructure.

The crisis began when heavy rains led to the washing out of fiber-optic cables in Cameroon, which serves as the primary conduit for internet access to landlocked Chad. As a result, Chadian officials have been working tirelessly to restore connectivity, but efforts have faced hurdles due to the damage sustained by the cables.

In light of the situation, officials announced that discussions have taken place with representatives from the European Union and the African Development Bank to expedite Chad’s connection to the trans-Saharan fiber-optic network through neighboring Niger. This initiative represents a significant step toward reducing Chad's reliance on the current internet infrastructure that runs through Cameroon.

Brahim Abdelkerim, the Secretary General of Chad's Ministry of Telecommunications, expressed optimism for the future, indicating that by February 2025, Chad should no longer face the frequent internet interruptions that currently disrupt business activities. He highlighted the commitments made by both the Chadian and Nigerien governments to oversee the completion of the project.

The plan entails the installation of approximately 500 kilometers of fiber-optic cable extending from the capital city of N'Djamena to the border with Niger. This new connectivity is expected to provide a more stable and reliable internet service, alleviating the frustrations caused by existing disruptions.

To fund this ambitious project, financial contributions have been secured, with the European Union committing $31.4 million and the African Development Bank pledging an additional $55 million. This funding will be crucial in facilitating the development of the trans-Saharan fiber-optic network, which will eventually connect Chad with Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria.

Sona Jarosova, the head of the EU political mission to Chad, emphasized the importance of this connection, stating that it would effectively eliminate the frequent blackouts caused by disruptions in Cameroon.
