Find Your Ultimate Guardian

A well-trained protection dog can be a loving companion that can also protect your family against intruders. These brave dogs know the difference between playmates and real threats, and are eager to fend them off.

LGDs are true work animals, and cannot double as traditional pet dogs. Choose a breed that has proven its guarding abilities in the field.

Belgian Malinois

Belgian Malinois are fearless, intelligent dogs that are known for their work as military and police K-9s and bomb and drug detection dogs. However, when raised correctly in the right home, these incredible companions make for excellent family pets as well.

One of four herding breeds from Belgium, the Belgian Malinois is known for its impressive strength and agility. They have short double coats and lean, square bodies. The breed is often confused with its German Shepherd counterparts, but it is distinctly different.

As herding dogs, Malinois have a high prey drive. This can cause them to become interested in moving objects, such as cars or children. To prevent this, early obedience and socialization training is crucial. In addition, they have to be groomed regularly. This includes brushing them a few times a week using a medium-bristle brush or a rubber grooming mitt to promote new hair growth and distribute oils throughout their coats. Their nails also need to be trimmed daily.

Dutch Shepherd

A nimble, intelligent breed with a strong work ethic, the Dutch Shepherd is an excellent choice for police work, security, military and search and rescue duties. They’re also talented athletes for agility and flyball competitions, tracking, herding and weight pulling.

This herding dog was originally bred to protect people and livestock from predators in rural areas. They also maintained order on the farm by patrolling, keeping hens away from the garden and making sure cows showed up for milking each day.

Due to their high intelligence and intuitive nature, Dutch Shepherds are highly trainable. But obedience training is essential to funnel all their raw ability into a useful talent. When not working, Dutch Shepherds adore their families and make great companions for older children who understand how to play safely with dogs. They’re generally good with other pets, too. But, as with any breed, they should be socialized from an early age to avoid becoming aloof around strangers.

Doberman Pinscher

As their name suggests, Doberman Pinschers are guardians at heart. They are keen and energetic, and happiest when they're with their people. They need a generous amount of physical and mental exercise, as well as consistent training to help them focus their abundant energy.

They're also sensitive and easily tipped off to danger by the slightest sign of anxiety. For this reason, Dobermans need a strong leader who will display natural authority. They must also be carefully socialized around strangers to avoid excessive suspicion that could turn into aggression.

A Doberman's quick mind and intelligent protective behavior can save you from many threats, including burglary, carjacking, or even a dangerous snake. Just ask Charlotte Svillic, whose Doberman saved her baby by grabbing the toddler by the diaper and moving him away from the deadly snake.

German Shepherd

A German Shepherd’s natural instincts can inspire it to protect its family, home and property. Its large size is also a physical deterrent to potential threats and can make them feel uncomfortable. The breed is often used as police dogs and has been trained in a variety of other roles, including service dog, herding and search and rescue.

German Shepherds are also a popular choice for families as they are very affectionate and docile around their owners. They do well with obedience training and will thrive when given schedules, tasks and challenges to complete.

Having protection dogs will give you peace of mind that you and your family are safe at night and while out and about during the day. A well-trained German Shepherd will bark to alert you and others that someone or something is present, ward off intruders or attack them if needed. It’s important to find a reputable trainer for the type of protection you want your dog to have.
