How to improve writing and write better

How to improve writing and write better

Writing well goes beyond a person's innate talent. Writing is a trade and as such, it is learned. Check below 7 tips to improve your writing

Not all people manage to write acceptable texts, and it is that writing must follow a series of guidelines that are learned and polished with practice. Do you want to know how to start writing a text but don't have enough idea how to do it? Check the following tips that we offer you so you can improve your writing.

1 – Read

In order to write good texts, we need to know previously the examples of the different genres in which we can classify our writing, in order to follow the particularities of each one; In addition to helping us expand our vocabulary. We do this through reading. A good exercise before starting to write is to have read enough.

2 – Organize the ideas

First, you must be very clear about the idea you want to convey and then focus on the details. One of the keys to journalism is to use the “5 Ws” (for the initials of the words in English), which in Spanish are what, who, how, when, where and why. You can transpose them to other texts as it is a very effective formula.

3 – Use simple words

Writing with fancy words does not add quality to your texts; and on the contrary, it may complicate them. When you write you should seek to be understood by everyone, from the president of a country to the least enlightened men. Achieving that is much more effective than embellishing the text with pompous words that do not provide any concept.

But in any case, keep in mind that it is not written in the same way as it is spoken and that these two types of communication are different and also carry different rules. As for the words, also keep in mind not to repeat them excessively: for this you can rely on a thesaurus.

4 – Separate the paragraphs

Regarding the structure of the text, it is important that you take two issues into account: the first is to separate the ideas into paragraphs, since writing everything "in a row" will make it look "pasted" and from the visual aspect the reader will feel listless The second consideration that you should have regarding the paragraph is that it is not too long. Short sentences or careful punctuation of longer sentences make the idea more understandable.

5 – Look for your text to be attractive

Of course, a university project is not written in the same way as an article for a humor magazine, for example. But whatever the subject you are writing about, you must try to catch the reader and ensure that, without losing the rigor of what you are saying, the text is attractive and not a preamble to the nap.

6 – A good closing

With writing, the same thing happens with good oral presentations: it is necessary to have a good ending, or else the text can be lost in nothing. You need to have an effective ending, whether it's a conclusion, a question that opens a new discussion, or the way you'll close a story beyond the story itself.

The ending is the last impression the reader gets; and as much as the first one was, it must catch him so that he remembers your text or wants to read you again. How To Get Better At Writing?

7 – Correct

Correcting a text is the last thing you will do with it before showing it and it is one of the most important stages of the writing process. The most convenient thing would be to prepare the text in such a way that you can give it a rest time before correcting it again since the distance will help you detect errors and make changes to achieve a better product.

This distance between the text and the writer can last a few hours or days, or in the cases of great novelists, they have spent years correcting a book before publishing it. The important thing is that you can review it and if you don't do it when you just finish it, the more effective the correction work will be.
