Spotify created a custom font for its app

business .

Spotify's recent update marks a significant visual overhaul of the audio streaming service, shifting the focus towards enhancing the user experience through a more visually appealing design.

The introduction of Spotify Mix, the company's new custom typeface, is a key element of this update. This bespoke font is being gradually implemented starting today, replacing the existing Circular typeface variant that has been a consistent feature across Spotify's app and desktop interfaces. By introducing Spotify Mix, the company aims to create a more cohesive and engaging visual identity, ultimately improving the overall user experience for its audience.

The name "Spotify Mix" holds significance as a nod to the ever-changing and dynamic evolution of audio culture over time, as articulated by Spotify's global head of brand design, Rasmus Wängelin. In a collaborative effort with Berlin-based foundry Dinamo Typefaces, Spotify Mix was meticulously crafted to embody this concept of continuous evolution.

Wängelin elaborates that the innovative variable font design of Spotify Mix is essentially a remix, blending elements from diverse typeface styles to create a truly unique and versatile visual identity. This approach reflects Spotify's commitment to embracing creativity and adaptability in the realm of design and branding.

According to Spotify's global head of brand design, Rasmus Wängelin, the outcome of the collaboration with Dinamo Typefaces is a sans-serif typeface that seamlessly merges elements from traditional and modern styles, resulting in a visually striking and one-of-a-kind appearance. In Spotify's official press release, Wängelin explains that the design team subtly integrated the shapes of sound waves into the font to evoke a sense of rhythm.

The incorporation of sharp angles and smooth curves within the typeface imparts a unique character that is distinctly representative of Spotify's brand identity. This careful balance of design elements aims to create a visually engaging and cohesive experience for users, reflecting the essence of Spotify's commitment to innovation and creativity.

Spotify plans to implement the Spotify Mix typeface across a wide range of applications, from playlists to marketing campaigns. As a variable font, Spotify Mix offers flexibility in adjusting attributes such as weight, width, and slant without the need for separate font files. This versatility enables Spotify to easily customize the appearance of various elements, such as playlist covers, promotional materials, and other content. By leveraging the capabilities of a variable font, Spotify can introduce a diverse range of visual styles while maintaining a consistent and unified design aesthetic.

This creative freedom allows for greater customization and visual appeal in Spotify's branding and promotional efforts. In addition to its application across playlists and marketing materials, the Spotify Mix typeface will also extend to the wordmark in Spotify's logo. This updated typeface can already be observed on the company's news portal, signaling a shift towards a cohesive visual identity.

The rollout of Spotify Mix will initially focus on languages utilizing Latin-based scripts and Vietnamese content. This gradual implementation is set to take place over the upcoming weeks, ensuring a smooth transition to the new typeface across various platforms and languages.
