Toshiba Introduces Mx11 Family, Promising Superior Capacity and Reduced Costs
Toshiba’s new Mx11 family of hard drives represents a significant leap forward in storage technology, delivering exceptional density and power efficiency. These innovations are designed to help organizations manage operational costs while addressing the relentless growth of data demands. The Mx11 family, which includes the MG11 and MA11 Series, provides tailored solutions to meet the diverse requirements of modern data centers, cloud environments, and enterprises.
Built on a shared architecture, both product lines feature a sophisticated 10-disk, helium-sealed design within a standard 3.5-inch form factor, operating at 7,200rpm. This advanced configuration incorporates Toshiba’s proprietary flux control microwave-assisted magnetic recording (FC-MAMR™) technology, enabling the drives to deliver superior performance and reliability. Equipped with a 1GiB buffer, the drives boast a high workload rating of 550TB per year and an impressive mean time to failure (MTTF) of 2.5 million hours. Additionally, the annualized failure rate (AFR) of 0.35% ensures robust and reliable performance for continuous 24/7 operations, making the Mx11 family an ideal choice for mission-critical applications.
The MG11 CMR HDD Series is optimized for cloud computing, data centers, and enterprise storage. Its new 24TB model provides a rapid and efficient means to scale storage density without expanding physical space requirements. This series features a 1GiB buffer and achieves an approximately 9% increase in maximum sustained transfer speeds, reaching up to 295MiB/s, outperforming previous models. With support for both 6Gbps SATA and 12Gbps SAS interfaces, the MG11 Series integrates seamlessly into existing infrastructure. These drives cater to a wide range of applications, including data storage, online backups, archival systems, and video surveillance. Security enhancements are available through optional sanitize instant erase (SIE) and self-encrypting drive (SED) features, ensuring robust protection against data breaches and unauthorized access.
The MA11 Series is engineered to maximize storage efficiency through host-managed shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technology. This advanced method enables overlapping physical tracks during write operations, significantly increasing storage density. The MA11 Series achieves an impressive 2.8TB per disk, providing substantial cost savings for data centers capable of optimizing their software for this architecture. Offered in 28TB and 27TB capacities, the MA11 Series delivers flexibility and efficiency for high-density storage needs. Like the MG11 Series, it supports a 6Gbps SATA interface and includes optional SED features for enhanced data security.
Toshiba’s Vice President and Head of Storage Products Division, Larry Martinez-Palomo, emphasized the significance of these innovations, stating that the Mx11 Series offers new levels of capacity and total cost of ownership (TCO) efficiency. This enables organizations to reduce operational costs while expanding their data center capabilities.
Both the MG11 and MA11 Series exemplify Toshiba’s commitment to addressing the evolving challenges of the digital age. The MG11 Series focuses on delivering superior performance, reliability, and security, making it ideal for applications requiring high-speed data transfers and robust safeguards. Meanwhile, the MA11 Series offers unmatched storage density, providing a cost-effective solution for data centers aiming to minimize expenses while maximizing capacity.
Sample shipments of the MG11 Series are slated to begin this month, with the MA11 Series expected to roll out in the fourth calendar quarter of this year. These releases demonstrate Toshiba’s leadership in the storage industry, offering advanced solutions that address critical challenges in data management, operational efficiency, and cybersecurity. By empowering businesses worldwide, the Mx11 family underscores Toshiba’s pivotal role in enabling digital transformation and driving the future of storage technology.
