Area control

Games have a map or board that players compete to control, usually by putting their own pieces to regions or areas or taking away their opponents' pieces. Campaign/legacy

Campaign board games are characterized by individual plays that are based on a collection of interconnected scenarios. Legacy board games are a particular kind of campaign game where your decisions and actions cause you to permanently (and frequently physically) alter the game and its elements. Examples of such permanent changes include applying stickers to the board or tearing up cards, which frequently offer a unique experience.

Drafting

In a draft, each player is given a set of alternatives (often cards, but occasionally dice) from which they must select one, leaving the rest open for the next player to select from. A shared central pool of options or a handful of cards transferred between players may be used to make the choice. This can apply to a game's full decision space or just a tiny portion of it. Such as choosing an ability to utilize during a round.

Engine-builder

In an engine-building board game, you'll develop an "engine" throughout the course of the game. This "engine" will take your initial resources and/or actions and turn them into additional resources. Which will then turn into even more resources, which will eventually become victory points.
