Unai Emery’s Villa beaten 3-2 in the Europa League

Villa were given a rude awakening on their return to continental competition by Legia Warsaw's experienced and disciplined side on Tuesday night, who proved too tough a test. Pawel Wszolek and Ernest Muci both scored early on for them, leaving Villa's defence exposed and vulnerable against Pawel Wszolek and Muci's attacks in the first half.

Starting poorly, the hosts were ahead within two minutes when Wszolek converted Patryk Kun's cross, with Jhon Duran and Lucas Digne making amends before Muci was allowed free to score with ease. A defensive breakdown then ensued allowing him to convert.

Unai Emery defended his selection

Unai Emery may have won four Europa Leagues as coach of Villa, yet his side were made to look discomfiting in Poland. Pawel Wszolek and Ernest Muci put Poland two up before Jhon Duran and Lucas Digne made an effort to reduce it before half time; but Muci immediately scored six minutes post break-time, leaving Villa with no hope.

Villa has taken 25 corners across their first five Premier League matches, so it would not come as a shock if they registered over 3.5 goals on Thursday evening. Gil Dias should make his first start since September's opening game of the year while Tomas Pekhart could link up top with Jhon Duran for Jhon Duran-Tomas Pekhart combo, Clement Lenglet could make an appearance since season opening and midfielder Youri Tielemans may also come into the team.

Aston Villa 2-2 Legia Warsaw

Aston Villa's Europa League debut was not as comfortable as expected, as their poor defensive play allowed Legia Warsaw a surprise win in Group E opener. Aston Villa were unfocused defensively and struggled in the second half to keep the ball out of their own net.

The visitors started the game confidently but were shocked when Pawel Wszolek met Patryk Kun's cross for an early goal from just three minutes in. Jhon Duran equalised when Nicolo Zaniolo's shot rebounded off of the post but were pegged back once more by Ernest Muci, who created space before expertly placing it past Emiliano Martinez for another score.

Jacob Ramsey and Matty Cash were brought on in place of Calum Chambers and Nicolo Zaniolo but could not help Villa get back into the game. Ollie Watkins and Moussa Diaby also entered but failed to have any significant effect as Legia maintained their lead and claimed victory.

Aston Villa 3-2 Legia Warsaw

Unai Emery made five changes for Aston Villa's European Conference League debut at Legia Warsaw but they could not recover as they lost 3-2 despite Kosta Runjaic describing it as a David-versus-Goliath battle at Stadion Wojska Polskiego.

Visitors were left reeling after Pawel Wszolek managed to evade Calum Chambers and meet Patryk Kun's far post cross. Jhon Duran levelled for the visitors through Nicolo Zaniolo's free-kick but hosts were back ahead midway through a thrilling first half when Wszolek beat Lucas Digne and crossed for Ernest Muci who scored easily from close range.

Villa's desperation to salvage a point saw them introduce Ollie Watkins, Douglas Luiz and Moussa Diaby but they were unable to breach the hosts. Muci sealed victory six minutes into the second half after being found by Marc Gual on a quick breakaway.

Legia Warsaw 3-2 Aston Villa

Villa were left lamenting their poor defending as they fell 3-2 on their European debut in Poland. An electrifying first half gave way to some poor final third defending that saw Villa defeated.

Pawel Wszolek gave the home side an early lead after dodging his marker to score from a low cross delivered by Pawel Zszolek. Villa quickly responded though as Jhon Duran headed home Nicolo Zaniolo's shot that had hit the bar and been deflected on to him from Jhon Duran who headed it in himself.

At half-time, Villa were back in front when Ernest Muci made a decisive play to score. Calum Chambers and Konsa were outwitted to allow Ernest Muci to fire low past Emiliano Martinez for an equalising goal from Lucas Digne to Youri Tielemans for equalisation - something Villa hadn't managed prior to half time.

But they were unable to build on their good work, as Muci scored his second of the game with five minutes remaining when he dashed into space and fired past Martinez.
