Certificate of Registration
Here you can read more about your vehicle's registration certificate and what you can use it for.
A registration certificate is issued for each registered vehicle in Sweden. Since 2004, the registration certificate consists of two parts, part 1 and part 2.
Order the registration certificate with the e-service.
Order registration certificate
Only the most recently issued registration certificate is valid. If you order a duplicate, the previously issued registration certificate will become invalid.
You can see the issue date of the latest registration certificate in our e-service that shows vehicle details (under Vehicle identity) or in our "My Vehicles" app.
We send out a registration certificate in connection with a new vehicle owner being registered or if any of the vehicle information on the registration certificate is changed.
If the vehicle is owned by a minor who does not have a driver's license for the vehicle, the registration certificate is sent to the guardian who is registered in the road traffic register.
Part 1 of the registration certificate – technical data and other
Part 1 is sent to the person who owns or uses the vehicle. It is free and sent directly to the address we have in the road traffic register. In cases where the vehicle has a note about leasing, Part 1 of the registration certificate is sent to the user of the vehicle (that is, the lessee).
Part 1 of the registration certificate contains the following:
- an authorization code, which you can use to log into certain e-services on our website
- information about who owns or uses the vehicle
- information on leasing or credit purchase
- technical data about the vehicle
- general information about the vehicle
- the part to be used for written notification of - declaration - suspension - order of signs - order of Part 2 of the registration certificate.
Part 2 of the registration certificate – a document of value
Part 2 is sent to the person who, according to the road traffic register, owns the vehicle. If the vehicle has a leasing listing, Part 2 is sent to the lessor. Part 2 of the registration certificate is a document of value and must always be included in the event of a change of ownership, even in cases where a change of ownership takes place to a car company.
Part 2 of the registration certificate contains the following:
- information about the current owner of the vehicle
- information about the previous owner/user of the vehicle (max. 3 pieces)
- general information about the vehicle
- the data matrix needed to report a change of ownership via our My Vehicles app
- the part to be used for written notification of - change of ownership - deregistration.
Do you need a duplicate of Part 2 of the registration certificate?
To ensure that it is the vehicle's registered owner who orders a duplicate of Part 2 of the registration certificate, an identity check is required. It takes place either at the time of ordering (with e-identification in our e-service) or when you pick up the proof at one of the post's delivery points. If you choose the latter option, a fee will be charged.
You have two options:
- You can place your order directly on our website and identify yourself with e-identification. We then send the duplicate free of charge directly to the address we have in the road traffic register.
- You can place your order here on our website and choose cash on delivery. Then you can redeem the duplicate at the post's delivery point. See the current fee for collection. Upon handing over, an identity check takes place.
Your new proof will normally arrive within a week. Contact us if you have not received the proof after that time.
When traveling abroad
Are you going to go abroad with your vehicle? Then remember that you must have your registration certificate with you. If you have an EU-harmonized registration certificate, it is enough to bring Part 1.
EU harmonized registration certificate since 2004
When you receive a new proof, the old one must be destroyed. If you have not received an EU-harmonized registration certificate, your old one is still valid.
Certificate of Registration, Part 1
Certificate of Registration, Part 2
Why a new registration certificate?
The background to the EU harmonized registration certificate is a decision made at EU level that all member states must have similar registration certificates (EU Directive 1999/37/EC). It will then be easier to check the other countries' vehicle data.
The hope is that the EU harmonized registration certificate means increased free movement in international road traffic, improved traffic safety, and that it makes illegal trade in vehicles more difficult.
What is the difference between the EU-harmonized registration certificate and the old one?
The EU harmonized registration certificate has the same functions and contains largely the same information as the old one. The most important changes are these:
- The new registration certificate consists of two documents (Part 1 and Part 2) instead of the previous one.
- The new registration certificate has a number of different security prints to make counterfeiting more difficult, for example, a watermark.
- Part 2 of the registration certificate must be treated as a document of value.
- Scrapping certificates can no longer be issued on the registration certificate but must be submitted on a separate document.
- Previous owners of the vehicle will be printed in Part 2 of the registration certificate
