MOBI is an abbreviation for Mobipocket eBook, which is a type of eBook reader. They are used to store digital books and are optimized for use on mobile devices with limited bandwidth.

How to Open a MOBI File
There are a number of free programs that can open MOBI files that are worth noting. These include Calibre, Stanza, Sumatra PDF, Mobi File Reader, FBReader, Okular, and Mobipocket Reader.

There may be a program on your computer that can open MOBI files, and you may be able to use it to convert the MOBI file to another format. Mobipocket has been owned by Amazon since 2005. Support for the MOBI file format has been deprecated since November 2011. Kindle devices use the MOBI file structure, but the files have a different DRM scheme and are saved with the AZW file extension, rather than the MOBI format.
The.PRC file extension is used by some Mobipocket eBook files, rather than the.MOBI file extension, which is used by others.
MOBI books are available for free download on a variety of websites, including Project Gutenberg, Feedbooks, and Open Library, and can be read on mobile devices.
A separate file with the.MBP file extension is created when additional files, such as bookmarks or annotations, are added to a MOBI file by Kindle's applications. If the file is encrypted, the extension.SMBP is appended to the end of the filename.

Are you still having trouble opening the file?
If you are unable to open your MOBI file using the suggestions provided above, double-check that you are in fact working with a MOBI file before proceeding. The reason for this is that some files look similar to MOBI files but are not related in any way, and thus cannot be opened with the same software as MOBI files.
MOB (MOBTV Video) files are a good example of what we're talking about. Contrary to what some may believe, these are video files that can only be viewed through multimedia applications such as Windows Media Player. You would either receive an error or be presented with a jumble of incoherent text if you attempted to open a MOB file using an eBook reader.
They are similar to MOI Audio files in that they are in the.MOI format, but they, like the latter, cannot be opened with any of the text-based file readers or converters that have been discussed thus far.
