How to open, edit, & convert MOBI files

MOBI.

MOBI is an abbreviation for Mobipocket eBook, which is a type of eBook reader. They are used to store digital books and are optimized for use on mobile devices with limited bandwidth.

Bookmarking, JavaScript, frames, as well as the ability to make notes and corrections are all included in MOBI files.

How to Open a MOBI File

There are a number of free programs that can open MOBI files that are worth noting. These include Calibre, Stanza, Sumatra PDF, Mobi File Reader, FBReader, Okular, and Mobipocket Reader.

Additionally, MOBI files can be read by popular eBook readers such as the Amazon Kindle as well as a variety of smartphones that support the MOBI file format, among other things.

Many eBook readers, including the popular Kindle device, are also equipped with desktop software, mobile applications, and web-based tools that allow for the reading of MOBI files. The Amazon Kindle App, for example, is available for Windows, macOS, and mobile devices, and the Kindle Cloud Reader allows for online reading of MOBI files. Kindle Cloud Reader is also available for Android devices.

How to Convert a MOBI File

Making use of an online converter, such as DocsPal, is the most efficient method of converting a MOBI file. Alternatively, you can upload a MOBI file to that website or enter the URL of an online MOBI file, and the file will be converted to one of the many available file formats. EPUB, LIT, LRF, PDB, PDF, FB2, and RB are all valid file formats for this product.

There may be a program on your computer that can open MOBI files, and you may be able to use it to convert the MOBI file to another format. In addition to converting MOBI files to a variety of other formats, Calibre and Mobi File Reader both offer the option of saving an open MOBI file as TXT or HTML.

MOBI files can also be converted using free file conversion software or online services, which can be found on the internet. Zamzar, a free online MOBI converter, is a good illustration of this. It converts MOBI files to PRC, OEB, AZW3, and a variety of other popular file formats, and all you have to do is upload the MOBI file to Zamzar and then download the converted file—there is no need to install any software to use the service.

More Information on MOBI Files

Mobipocket has been owned by Amazon since 2005. Support for the MOBI file format has been deprecated since November 2011. Kindle devices use the MOBI file structure, but the files have a different DRM scheme and are saved with the AZW file extension, rather than the MOBI format.

The.PRC file extension is used by some Mobipocket eBook files, rather than the.MOBI file extension, which is used by others.

MOBI books are available for free download on a variety of websites, including Project Gutenberg, Feedbooks, and Open Library, and can be read on mobile devices.

A separate file with the.MBP file extension is created when additional files, such as bookmarks or annotations, are added to a MOBI file by Kindle's applications. If the file is encrypted, the extension.SMBP is appended to the end of the filename.

KindleGen, a free command-line tool provided by Amazon, can be used to create a MOBI file.

You can learn more about MOBI files by visiting the MobileRead Wiki, which contains a wealth of information on the subject.

Are you still having trouble opening the file?

If you are unable to open your MOBI file using the suggestions provided above, double-check that you are in fact working with a MOBI file before proceeding. The reason for this is that some files look similar to MOBI files but are not related in any way, and thus cannot be opened with the same software as MOBI files.

MOB (MOBTV Video) files are a good example of what we're talking about. Contrary to what some may believe, these are video files that can only be viewed through multimedia applications such as Windows Media Player. You would either receive an error or be presented with a jumble of incoherent text if you attempted to open a MOB file using an eBook reader.

They are similar to MOI Audio files in that they are in the.MOI format, but they, like the latter, cannot be opened with any of the text-based file readers or converters that have been discussed thus far.
