MEAT247-Technology improving the red meat value chain
It is now widely accepted that Nigeria's red meat value chain requires a complete overhaul. Animal production, transportation, processing, and storage, as well as distribution and consumption are all covered.
Slaughtering unfit livestock and/or processing in an unsanitary environment poses a serious health risk because it results in the transmission of animal-to-human diseases. (in medical parlance, this is referred to as zoonosis).
It is to mitigate and prevent the aforementioned heinous and unfortunate scenario that prompted the development of Meat247 by Livestock247 (Nigeria's first and truly unique online livestock marketplace).
Livestock247 recognizes the critical nature of animal medical and mobility histories in resolving the issues surrounding the safety of animal products for human consumption.
About Meat247
The Meat247 feature was added to Livestock247 last year during the lockdown triggered by the covid-19 pandemic to enable consumers in Lagos to purchase clean, traceable, and wholesome meat with a single click and have it delivered to their preferred addresses. Since then, the service has been launched in Abuja and is about to begin in Port Harcourt.
Meat247 is a safe, wholesome, and hygienic alternative to dirty, unhealthy meat sources found in traditional restaurants.
Dr. Ugochi Izuora, Livestock247's Head of Operations/Quality Control, stated during our meeting at the company's headquarters in Opebi, Ikeja-Lagos, "Most of us are unaware that eating meat from unfit for slaughter livestock or processed in unsanitary conditions can result in miscarriages in women, tuberculosis, and infertility in both men and women, among other diseases..."
She continued by stating that one of the primary causes of antimicrobial resistance (the accumulation of antimicrobial resistance in the body) is the consumption of animal products (Meat, Offal, and Milk) from animals that have not completed their withdrawal period, making it nearly impossible to treat diseases in humans using currently available medications.
This elevates 'minor' illnesses to 'major' problems, which may result in death; imagine someone dying from a 'minor' injury for which no drug appears to work?
Leveraging Technology
With Meat247, Livestock247 leverages technology to provide consumers with wholesome meat with the primary goal of mitigating the spread of animal-to-human disease transmission and contributing its quota to the fight against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).
Livestock247 understands that finding wholesome and hygienically processed meat should be as simple as ordering it, which is why the company has built a technology product around meat ordering and fulfillment, according to Olubodun Akinyele, the company's chief technology officer.
Additionally, the agritech start-up has a special credit arrangement with prominent hotels and restaurants in Lagos and Abuja through their 'Buy Now, Pay Later' program.
