Paystack, MTN, Dstv, others emerge GAGE Awards 2021 winners
The recently concluded GAGE Awards 2021 were historic. They brought together top influencers, comedians, fintech experts, and Internet Africa's biggest stars to virtually celebrate the incredible feats accomplished by individuals and brands that have had a significant impact on people's lives in Africa and across continents.
Speaking about the Awards' impact and relevance, Mr Johnson Anorh, Convener of the GAGE Awards, stated:” The GAGE Awards' importance in fostering innovation and growth in the Digital Economy as we now know it has become increasingly clear. The entire world was in lockdown due to a pandemic. We saw how dependent we were on the digital space to continue driving the economy and maintaining some semblance of sanity. It was as if we had been teleported into the future, particularly in this part of the world.”
Hosted by former Big Brother Naija star Bisola, the GAGE Awards night featured cameo appearances by top entertainers including comedian Damola, JOSH2Funny, BKB the Magician, Badboy Timz, and teenage sensation Batya Anorh, who serenaded the audience with her incredible sound.
“What we've done is highlighted businesses, organizations, and individuals who were innovative in their use of technology to solve various problems, particularly in the last year,” Anorh explained. Commerce, social interaction, and mental health are all examples of issues. As a result, we have categories for Fintech, Marketing, and Entertainment. The overall goal is to contribute to raising standards in order to make life easier and more enjoyable for consumers of these technologies.”
GAGE Awards
Nengi Hampson defeated Erica Nlewedim, Pamilerin Adegoke, Aisha Yesuf, and Tomike Adeoye to become Africa's best influencer for 2020/21. This category was created as a result of public nominations and voting. Since leaving the Big Brother Naija Lockdown house and securing numerous endorsement deals with top brands, the Big Brother Naija Lockdown star has been a huge internet sensation as an Influencer. She has amassed a cult following among Nigerians and people worldwide.
According to the Convener, the GAGE Awards are assisting in demonstrating where the digital technology industry's bar is set. More importantly, once the height of the bar is established, it becomes easier for intelligent and innovative minds and businesses to desire to reach it, if not exceed it. The rippling effect will generate the type of growth that is used to gauge modern economy development.
The Banking App of the Year competition was fierce, with top banks GTBank, Access Bank, VBank, Alat by Wema, and Zenith Bank all vying for the title. Vbank was the category's winner. It was a surprise to see it defeat established traditional banks.
Mr Macaroni won the highly coveted title of Online Comedian of the Year, defeating Taaoma and a slew of other contenders. Mr Macaroni has demonstrated a high level of consistency in his portrayal of the 'Sugar Daddy' character, which has brought joy to Nigerians.
MTN Nigeria won the Data Service Provider of the Year category, defeating the data kings in a close race. This was an audience choice category, and MTN should be proud of themselves for wresting the crown away from Airtel, who was defending their title from last year.
Paystack was named the winner of the Best Digital Financial Platform category. Ndani Tv was named Content Creator of the Year; Fishbone the film was named Online Film and Documentary of the Year; and RED Tv's 'The Men's Club' was named Webseries of the Year. The DSTV Nigeria website was named Website of the Year, beating out four other outstanding websites; the podcast 'I Said What I Said' was named Podcast of the Year; and Nairametrics was named Blog of the Year, beating out four other outstanding blogs.
Oppo, a premium smartphone brand, won the Online Campaign of the Year award for their #ShotOnOppo campaign, which engaged the audience in 2020 and achieved the brand's marketing objectives. AriseTv News Online won the 2020/21 Online News Platform of the Year award.
One of the night's most significant awards was the GAGE STAR Award, which recognizes the most outstanding digital mind who revolutionized the digital space in the year 2020/21 with an intriguing innovation that made life easier and simpler. Act of Online Comedy JOSH2FUNNY made history as the first recipient of the GAGE STAR Award. His brilliant idea #DONTLEAVEMECHALLENGE quickly spread beyond Africa's borders to become a global phenomenon. It brought joy to many during the bleak year of the pandemic's global spread. He is deserving of this acknowledgment.
It's worth noting that this is the second year of the GAGE Awards. It is a comprehensive celebration of individuals, groups, and brands who have made life easier and better for everyone. The GAGE Awards have a track record of fostering growth, accelerating innovation, and attracting new talent to the digital space.
