5 Best Way to Memorize Things While You Study

Oh, we remember how busy finals week was! Whether you're in high school or near the end of your college career, most would agree that an exam of any kind can make the most confident and well-prepared students nervous.

One of the worst things some students can do is prepare for a multiple choice exam when they should be studying for the essay exam. Understanding and researching the test format is key to preparing yourself for the test.

Again, there are many unique ways to memorize material while you study it! Following a few simple tips can make testing easier, and your tests can make your life less frustrating.

Our biggest tip for final week before we start is to study a week ahead!

This prevents any stress, negativity, exhaustion etc. knowing you have enough time to study.

1. Don't research what you already know.

The biggest mistake we see students making when they start preparing for a final exam is reviewing course information they already know, such as topics covered in previous Exams 1 and 2. I hope you can agree with me that there is a lot of information that needs to be covered in each course...don't waste time and energy reviewing basic understandings or concepts that you should have learned as common sense.

Sit in a quiet place and take your class notes and place them on your desk. Next highlight any sections that you do not understand. This is the first step in learning...that way, you can focus and prioritize the areas that need review.

Be sure to review the textbook (test chapter) or PowerPoint slides provided in the course. By doing this, you should be able to gain insight into the parts of your attack that you need to attack the most.

Evaluate the material at this point and compare it to the study guide or exam review your professor has given you, while trying to cross off subjects not covered in the exam review.

The chapters that are not crossed out are the ones you need to focus on. Reducing the amount of information that should be studied in the week leading up to the exam allows more time to be allocated to more difficult topics.

2. Stay active and eat well.

Laying on the couch in your favorite sweatshirt might seem like the best way to learn...but it's not! Being too comfortable can easily lead to fatigue, drowsiness and daydreaming. It is best to study standing up, with notes in hand, and review while walking.

Find a clean classroom and use the whiteboard to your advantage. Visuals (concept maps, diagrams, and graphs) can liven up research sessions and add a little humor to the learning process.

Must eat! Eating carbs allows the brain to think more clearly, focus more, and be less fatigued. However, junk food may be cheap and appear to save you time and money, but they do nothing to help your brain retain information. Avoid processed and junk foods, such as fast food restaurants, salty snack foods, and even soda.

Pasta, sandwiches, milk, vegetables and fruit are excellent sources of carbohydrates and should really be included in your diet during test prep. Especially the night before and the morning. Never study hungry, it's impossible to concentrate when your stomach keeps growling at you! Then the mind is focused on wanting food instead of studying.

It is also important to maintain a regular sleep pattern. Brain fatigue during exams can lower your test scores exponentially, and while staying up all night is okay and common, make sure you set boundaries or take a 30-minute nap. Don't drink too many pick-me-ups, the sugar will crash your body the next day, limit yourself to a maximum of two drinks, if not less.

It is also wise to let the body pump up and move before the test. speed-walking. Research shows that exercising gets your blood flowing, giving your body an adrenaline rush, and it also boosts endorphin levels. It’s also a common way to deal with anxiety and stress!

3. Know the purpose:

Why even study this? We often suffer from a common symptom called "information overload" when we study...for this reason, it is often difficult to recall the material afterwards. Make sure you know what you are studying for, what motivates you to keep going?

- understand a specific concept or idea

- Improve yourself in specific areas

- know why someone does something

- Answer assigned academic questions

Keeping goals in mind while studying can greatly help you focus on relevant information and remember them better.

There are almost countless reasons why you learn something, make sure you understand yours.
