Tuggs Secures £1.1 Million for Insect-Based Dog Food Innovation

business .

Insect-based fresh dog food company Tuggs has successfully secured £1.1 million in funding from a mix of institutional investors and angel backers, marking a significant step forward for the innovative startup. Tuggs offers a unique approach to pet nutrition by blending insects with various proteins, including meat and fish, along with vegetables, to create a healthy and sustainable dog food option that benefits both pets and the planet.

Recent research has revealed that a 10kg dog consuming wet food generates a carbon footprint comparable to that of a human. Moreover, pet food is responsible for up to 30% of the carbon emissions associated with food production. By integrating farmed insects into its recipes, Tuggs aims to address this pressing environmental concern. Insects are not only a rich source of protein but also require significantly fewer resources to farm—up to 95% less land, water, and carbon emissions compared to traditional livestock such as beef.

Since its launch in late 2022, Tuggs has made impressive strides in the market, having sold over 350,000 meals to dogs across the UK. The company has recently expanded its operations, moving into new offices in London to better accommodate its growing team and business needs. The funding secured in a Pre-Seed round earlier this year has played a critical role in facilitating essential developments over the last five months, including team hiring, product development, and marketing initiatives. The team’s headcount has increased by 100% in the past year, particularly in key divisions such as customer services and product engineering, reflecting the startup’s rapid growth.

A central focus for Tuggs has been the complete transition of its production processes to the UK. This move not only aligns with the company’s commitment to sustainability but also allows for greater oversight and control over product quality and development. Currently, Tuggs operates on a direct-to-consumer subscription model, which has proven effective in attracting a loyal customer base. Bremner attributes much of this success to the company’s sustainable approach, which resonates with eco-conscious consumers.

Harry Bremner, the founder of Tuggs, emphasizes the company’s mission: “Our ethos is about reducing reliance on livestock without compromising on the nutritional composition of the food. Consumers are increasingly drawn to Tuggs due to the quality of our products, but it’s essential for us as a brand to build sustainably, which is why we are pioneering the use of alternative proteins such as insects.” This focus on quality and sustainability not only benefits dogs but also contributes to a more environmentally friendly pet food industry.

Bremner also highlighted a major milestone for Tuggs: the successful transition of its entire production and supply chain to the UK. This strategic decision has enhanced the company’s ability to control product development while providing significant opportunities for scaling operations. Looking ahead to 2025, Tuggs is excited about the potential for rapid growth and the introduction of new products that align with its mission.

The startup collaborates with a reputable fresh food manufacturer in the UK, ensuring compliance with Red Tractor certified standards that prioritize high levels of animal welfare. This commitment to ethical practices is part of Tuggs’ broader vision to revolutionize pet nutrition. Simon Hulme, a professor at UCL’s School of Management and one of Tuggs’ first investors, praised Bremner’s professionalism and analytical skills, expressing his enthusiasm for supporting the company's vision from its inception.

As Tuggs continues to innovate and expand, its emphasis on sustainability, quality, and ethical sourcing positions it as a strong contender in the competitive pet food market. The startup’s unique approach is not only beneficial for dogs but also appeals to a growing demographic of eco-conscious consumers seeking nutritious and environmentally friendly alternatives for their pets. With a clear vision for the future, Tuggs is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of pet food options, paving the way for a more sustainable and responsible industry.
