AMD plans to acquire Finnish start-up Silo AI for $665 million to bolster its competition with Nvidia

business .

AMD's acquisition of Finnish AI startup Silo AI for $665 million is a strategic move aimed at bolstering its AI capabilities to compete with Nvidia, the current market leader. This acquisition, one of the largest AI takeovers in Europe, signifies AMD's commitment to expanding its AI services.

Silo AI, headquartered in Helsinki, is one of Europe's largest private AI labs, known for developing tailored AI models and platforms for enterprise clients. The startup recently initiated a project to build large language models (LLMs) in various European languages, including Swedish, Icelandic, and Danish. This move aligns with Silo AI's commitment to "open source" AI models, which are freely available and customizable, contrasting with the proprietary models favored by companies like OpenAI and Google.

The acquisition is significant as it represents the largest purchase of a privately held AI startup in Europe since Google's acquisition of DeepMind in 2014. It comes at a time when buyouts by Silicon Valley companies are under increased scrutiny from regulators in Brussels and the UK. Despite this, AMD is moving forward with the deal, which is expected to close in the second half of the year, subject to regulatory approval.

Vamsi Boppana, senior vice-president of AMD’s artificial intelligence group, highlighted that the acquisition will accelerate AMD’s customer engagements and deployments while enhancing its AI technology stack. Silo AI's team of 300 will leverage AMD's software tools to build custom LLMs, the technology behind popular chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. Peter Sarlin, Silo AI's co-founder and CEO, described the acquisition as a "logical next step" for the company, aiming to become a flagship AI company. Silo AI has previously emphasized the importance of open models, such as their "Poro" family, in strengthening European digital sovereignty and democratizing access to AI technologies.

The acquisition underscores the competitive landscape in the AI sector, where AMD seeks to challenge Nvidia's dominance. Nvidia has a strong foothold in the AI market, driven by its multibillion-dollar investment in its proprietary software platform, Cuda, which has allowed its chips to run a wide range of applications. Nvidia's success in AI has propelled its valuation past $3 trillion. To compete, AMD has been developing its MI300 chips, directly challenging Nvidia's Hopper line. Additionally, AMD is involved in the development of Triton, an OpenAI-led initiative that aims to provide an alternative to Nvidia's Cuda, allowing easier switching between chip providers for AI developers.

AMD's acquisition of Silo AI is a strategic move to rapidly scale its business and enhance customer engagement. By integrating Silo AI's capabilities, AMD aims to bridge its foundational AI software with practical, real-world applications. This acquisition is a part of AMD's broader strategy to focus more on software, which helps semiconductor companies retain customers and generate more predictable revenue streams, moving beyond the volatile chip sales cycle.

This shift towards software integration is becoming a critical battleground in the semiconductor industry, as evidenced by the increasing importance of software in Nvidia's success. Nvidia's proprietary software platform, Cuda, has allowed it to dominate the AI market by enabling its chips to handle a wide range of applications, from graphics processing to AI workloads. Nvidia's strategy includes offering over 600 pre-trained AI models and launching new platforms like NIM to facilitate quick deployment of AI services for enterprise customers.

Similarly, AMD's move to acquire Silo AI and invest in developing alternatives like Triton, which allows easier switching between different chip providers, demonstrates its commitment to expanding its AI capabilities and competing with Nvidia. By enhancing its AI offerings and focusing on software, AMD aims to drive customer engagement and scale its operations more effectively.

This acquisition also highlights the growing importance of open-source models in the AI landscape. Silo AI's commitment to open-source AI models, such as its "Poro" family, aims to democratize access to AI technologies and strengthen digital sovereignty in Europe, contrasting with the proprietary models of companies like OpenAI and Google. In summary, AMD's acquisition of Silo AI is a strategic effort to enhance its AI capabilities, drive customer engagement, and secure a more predictable revenue stream by integrating advanced software solutions into its semiconductor business.
