Australian police seize devices responsible for sending over 318 million phishing texts

In just a few months, Australian police forces have seized 29 SIM boxes and "thousands" of SIM cards in raids across several states aimed at curtailing smishing—SMS phishing—attacks.

In New South Wales (NSW), authorities located 26 of these cellular devices, which contain multiple SIM slots and are capable of sending large volumes of text messages. These 26 SIM boxes had been used to send over 318 million messages in the past several months, defrauding victims of millions of dollars. In Victoria, three SIM boxes were uncovered. Although Victorian authorities did not specify the number of messages these boxes had sent, they indicated that the devices might have been capable of sending hundreds of thousands of malicious text messages simultaneously each day.

The coordinated police action resulted in six arrests—four in NSW and two in Victoria—with various charges laid against the suspects. The investigation, initiated by NSW Police in March, was conducted through the AFP-led Joint Policing Cybercrime Coordination Centre (JPC3). This center includes participation from all state and territory police agencies, as well as the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC).

AFP Detective Superintendent Tim Stainton described SIM boxes as "cheap and malicious machines" used by criminals to defraud hundreds of victims simultaneously. "Criminals will send millions of deceptive text messages to Australian mobile users, casting a wide net over the entire community in an attempt to trap and defraud as many victims as possible," Stainton said. He emphasized that if not disrupted through police action, the seized SIM boxes had the combined potential to continue distributing between four and six million fraudulent messages daily.

This crackdown highlights the extensive efforts by Australian authorities to combat smishing and protect citizens from large-scale fraud operations.
