NGEN Commits $21.4 Million to Advancements in Quantum, Space, and EV Manufacturing

Next Generation Manufacturing Canada (NGen) is making a significant investment of $21.4 million into 15 advanced manufacturing projects spread across the country. NGen, which serves as a federally funded innovation cluster, is dedicated to enhancing Canada’s manufacturing sector through innovation and collaboration. This recent funding initiative aligns with its ongoing commitment to fostering sustainable practices in manufacturing, particularly through its newly launched $100-million sustainable manufacturing challenge.

The projects selected for funding span three distinct streams within NGen's framework: the Commercialization of Quantum Technologies program, the Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Value Chain program (EVMP), and the Moonshot program, which is focused on space-oriented innovations. NGen's investment, combined with $37.4 million in contributions from industry partners, brings the total value of these advanced manufacturing projects to nearly $59 million.

In the Commercialization of Quantum Technologies stream, four projects received $5.6 million in funding from NGen, along with $8.5 million in industry contributions. One of the standout initiatives is being led by Sherbrooke, Quebec-based Nord Quantique, in collaboration with Toronto’s OTI Lumionics. Their project, titled "Quantum Simulations for Materials Discovery," aims to develop and test a cutting-edge quantum computing platform designed to simulate material properties for various industrial applications. Nord Quantique is at the forefront of quantum technology, recently achieving a significant milestone in error correction for quantum computing, which is crucial for advancing practical applications.

Another notable project within this stream is spearheaded by Femtum, an advanced manufacturing startup based in Quebec City. Femtum, which secured over $5 million CAD in seed funding earlier this year for its semiconductor-focused laser technology, is developing a project called "Advanced Processes using Pulsed Lasers for Integrated Quantum Chips." This initiative is a collaboration with fellow Quebec firm WhalePiX and research center Solution Novika, highlighting the emphasis on innovation and partnership in the Canadian tech ecosystem.

The Moonshot stream, designed to support innovative solutions for mining, minerals, and manufacturing in both lunar and terrestrial environments, is allocated $5 million. This initiative is focused on developing novel "In-Situ Resource Utilization" (ISRU) solutions, which leverage local natural resources at mission sites. The six projects funded under this stream collectively received $4.6 million from NGen and its industry partners, showcasing a commitment to both space exploration and the sustainable use of resources.
