Dying Light 2 release date, platforms and everything you need to know

Dying Light breathed new life into the zombie game genre's decaying lungs, combining vibrant parkour and complex melee combat in a tight open world. Thus, almost immediately upon its release, it garnered a small legion of devoted fans.

Now, a sequel is in the works, with a Christmas release date set. Everything you need to know about it is included below.

Dying Light 2: Stay Human release date

Dying Light 2: Stay Human was first showcased at E3 2018 by Polish studio Techland. Then, at E3 2019, they returned with an extended 24-minute gameplay demo that went into much greater detail. However, due to a number of development issues and the ongoing pandemic, the game's progress has been slower than usual.

Nonetheless, the year is 2021, and Dying Light 2 now has a release date. A regular series of online update events dubbed Dying 2 Know has also revealed a wealth of new information about the game.

It will be available in stores on 7 December 2021, with pre-orders now open.

Dying Light 2 platforms

Dying Light 2 will be available on current-generation consoles, including the PlayStation 5 and Xbox One X/S, as well as last-generation consoles, including the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

It will also be available on the PC.

Dying Light 2 story

Dying Light 2 will follow some of the narrative templates established by the first game. However, this time around, players will take on the role of a new character - Aiden Caldwell. The hero of the first game remained in Harran to maintain order.

Likewise, it is set 15 years later, with humanity entering a new dark age, stripped of much of the technology it had taken for granted.

As far as we know, the new game will take place in a location called simply The City. There is a more European feel to the place, with large boulevards and monuments strewn about. Once again, players will need to make deals with local fixers and survivors in order to increase their resources and aid the area, though things may be a little more complicated this time.

We've seen multiple missions where player choices have a direct effect on the world around them over time, granting power and resources to certain factions and thus allowing them to gain the upper hand in neighbourhoods. That appears to be an intriguing dynamic that will undoubtedly play a role in Dying Light 2's overall story.

According to Techland, the game's map is four times the size of Dying Light's, with seven regions to explore, so there's a lot of ground to cover and investigate as Caldwell searches for a mysterious item that appears to have the potential to alter the course of history.

Dying Light 2 gameplay

In terms of gameplay, however, what we've seen of Dying Light 2 suggests a significant improvement over its predecessor. The developers have already stated that the number of available parkour moves has roughly doubled.

This means there are more opportunities to vault, jump, slide, and swing around the city, whether you're using rooftops as routes, swinging from suspended cables, or breaking your falls with carefully placed banners.

In addition, the melee combat system is expanding. There are reportedly 50 new weapon combinations available, as well as a slew of new hardware to experiment with, ranging from tomahawks to street signs. It appears to be as crunchy and potent as ever, while stealth is also a critical component of your arsenal.
