Helpio Assists Victims Report Rape/Sexual Assault Scenarios and Get Offenders Prosecuted
Why Helpio
According to a survey conducted by NOI Polls, one out of every three Nigerian girls would have experienced at least one type of sexual harassment by the time they reached 25. Harassment that leads to rape is underreported in cases.
According to a study by The Conversation, 90 percent of rape victims identified by news organizations are women, while 99 percent of perpetrators are men. Younger females are more vulnerable than older females; 46.1 percent of victims are between the ages of 11 and 20, while one-third are between 1 and 10. Women between the ages of 21 and 30 make up 8.4% of the victims.
The sexual violations are often carried out by people who are close to the women and girls, such as husbands, clergypersons, neighbors, and friends, according to an analysis of the rape cases. Rape cases in Nigeria are underreported due to the stigma associated with rape and the fact that some of the perpetrators get away with their inhumane acts.
Just 53% of rape cases are actually reported to the police, according to the results of an NOI survey. Of the 53 percent registered, criminals are allowed to walk free in 33 percent of the cases, meaning that three out of ten sex offenders are not prosecuted. Others may be discouraged from speaking up about attacks, preferring to live in silence instead.
Saadat Aliyu developed the Helpio mobile app to enable more victims to report rape cases and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Aliyu is a Kano-based app developer and the founder of Shamrock Innovations, a youth-focused tech innovation center.
Helpio is free to download from the PlayStore and comes in two languages: Hausa and English.
What Helpio Actually Does
The features of Helpio include four distinct services. People may use the 'Learn More' function to learn about harassment, sexual abuse, child sexual assault, and how to identify signs that suggest an assault is taking place. It also offers useful guidance on how to avoid such unfortunate events in the future.
Another valuable feature of the app is the 'Report Abuse' feature, which helps users to report incidents of sexual misconduct and include information that can assist in prosecuting the perpetrator. When anyone is in immediate danger of being assaulted or raped, the app offers access to helplines to provide immediate assistance.
The third feature is 'Counselling,' which provides users with free access to legal professionals, counselors, physicians, and other experts. The experts are all multi-disciplinary non-governmental organization (NGO) teams who freely offer their time and expertise to users through the Helpio app's chatbox.
The fourth feature is called "Experiences," and it includes a collection of stories about people who have been abused at some stage. The stories help other app users understand how abusers place young boys and girls in positions where they can be sexually abused. Users gain a greater understanding of what to avoid and what can lead to uncomfortable circumstances by reading others' experiences.
There are two support centers listed with contact information for users who want to visit one of them on the app. The Initiative for the Support of Sexual Assault Victims, Orphans, and Less Fortunate (ISSOL) and The Equity Destitute Child Right and Welfare Initiative (EDCRAW) are the two centers.
Using The App
Helpio registration is a quick process that only includes your name and email address. The app has a straightforward design, with all of the key features mentioned on the landing page. The expert's chat segment follows the style of other chat sites such as Whatsapp and offers a generally positive user experience.
However, beginning a conversation with an expert does not guarantee an immediate response, and if the matter is urgent, it is best to contact the emergency helplines.
Pricing
The Helpio app is free to use, and the experts are from NGOs who have partnered with the site to ensure that victims and future victims of sexual abuse have access to the help they need.
Sexual abuse is a felony in Nigeria, and offenders can be charged and rendered to deter others with the right facts and expert assistance. Helpio assists individuals in avoiding sexual harassment and obtaining expert assistance if the unfortunate event has already occurred.
