How To Enable A Default Music App On Your IPhone And IPad

How to Enable a Default Music App on Your iPhone and iPad.

How To Enable A Default Music App on Your iPhone and iPad

The power to set a default browser and email app on your iPhone or iPad was brought by iOS 14 and iPadOS 14. While other app types have not gained the ability to change default settings still, you can work on Siri to learn your how to operate your go-to music app.

When you want to set a default browser or email app on your iPhone or iPad, you need to take note that the setting ensures every relevant link opens the assigned app. With music apps, that’s not the case. Instead, as long as you’re running your iOS 14.5, iPadOS 14.5, or higher versions, Siri will inquire from you which audio app you’d like to use and it will remember your choice.

Getting Started

1. First, you start by launching Siri. On newer Apple devices, you can simply do this by just saying “Hey Siri” (that is if you have it turned on) or you can alternatively long-pressing the Side/Top/Power button on your iPhone or iPad with the Face ID.

2. Press and hold the Side button to activate Siri

3. On the older iPhones or iPads that comes with a Touch ID sensor, just long-press the Home button.

4. Siri will start listening to hear a voice command when you notice its icon appear on-screen. Just ask your phone or your tablet to play a song, artist, podcast, or audiobook. For example, you can say “Play Phil Collins,” “Play Sunflower by Post Malone,” or you can still say “Listen to the Vergecast.”

5. The icon of Siri will appear on-screen when it's listening

6. Your iPhone or iPad will ask you which music or audio app you would like to listen to the song, artist, podcast, or audiobook on. Click on the app that you would like to use.

7. Select an audio app

8. In some cases, Siri might want permission from you to access an app’s data before it can control the playback. Simply grant the voice assistant permission by clicking on the “Yes” button from the pop-up message.

9. Some of your apps will require you give Siri access

10. The on-screen overlay of Siri will transform into an audio widget. You can now control the playback, volume, and much more from this window. Clicking outside of the widget will make it disappear, but it won't stop your music, audio, or podcast, they will still continue playing in the background.

11. An audio player will appear on-screen

12. Again, If you ask Siri to play a song or audio program, your tablet or your phone will default automatically to whichever app you have selected. It will no longer open the Apple Music app.

As earlier mentioned, setting the default music app is not doing a setting that is baked into your iPhone or iPad. On occasion, Siri might just prompt you to choose again which audio app you’d like to use or even to assist in train the voice assistant.

You are also not restricted into using only the app you have selected. Instead, you can just be specific when using your command to Siri to open a song, artist, podcast, or audiobook in a particular app that you have already installed on your iPhone or iPad.
