How To Factory Reset Your iPhone Or iPad

Is it necessary to perform a factory reset on your iPhone or iPad? Perhaps you're planning to sell your phone and want to remotely wipe all of your personal data, or perhaps you've been a victim of theft and want to remotely wipe anything valuable on the device.

If this is the case, performing a factory reset is the simplest way to delete everything and restart.

Backup Your Device

A vital reminder: before performing a factory reset on your iPhone or iPad, ensure that you have backed up any data you wish to retain via iCloud or iTunes. Apple devices are pre-encrypted. This means that deleted files are not simply hidden and displayed as free space, but are permanently deleted – no software can restore deleted files.

Apple's support pages detail the various methods for backing up your iOS device, including iCloud and iTunes.

1. Connect to your Wi-Fi network and navigate to Settings > iCloud > iCloud Backup. After clicking Back Up Now, your files will be saved to your iCloud account and associated with your Apple ID.

2. You can verify the success of this backup by navigating to Settings > iCloud > iCloud Storage > Manage Storage. This displays the date and size of your most recent backup. You can now perform a factory reset on your iPhone or iPad.

Alternatively, open iTunes, connect your device to your computer (using your device's passcode or telling it to 'Trust This Computer'), and follow the on-screen instructions. When the device list appears, select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod and click Backup Now.

How To Perform a Factory Reset on Your iPhone or iPad

Wiping an iOS device is simple; all you'll need is the device's passcode, Apple ID, and Apple Password.

Sign Out of iCloud

Signing out of iCloud is one of the first steps toward wiping your phone. This will disable Apple's activation lock and delete your iCloud account. After receiving the iPhone or iPad, the recipient can sign in to their own iCloud account.

Nota bene: You are not required to do this if you are attempting to resolve an issue with your device or simply wish to restart. You can recover your data following a factory reset as long as you have access to your Apple ID and password.

In Settings, tap on your name and then on 'Sign Out.'

Sign out of iCloud from your phone's Settings menu.

How To Remotely sign out of iCloud

You can do this by logging into icloud.com and removing the device from the list. After selecting the device, tap on the Find my iPhone login and select "Remove from Account."

This must be done prior to selling an Apple device, as failing to do so will prevent the new user from logging into their own iCloud account. If your device has gone missing and you want to track it, skip these steps.

How To Reset Your iPhone/iPad – The Settings

If you have your device nearby, erasing it via the phone or tablet settings is simple. To accomplish this, open the settings and perform the following steps:

1. Select General.

2. Then, at the bottom of the screen, tap Reset.

3. Tap Erase All Content and Settings at this point.

4. Then, select either Backup Then Erase or Erase Immediately.

Factory Reset Using iTunes

You can reset your iPhone or iPad using iTunes on a PC or Mac. While this method is not as simple as resetting your iPhone or iPad directly from the device, it is an effective way to reset your device.

What you will require:

• A computer equipped with the most recent version of iTunes

• The charging cable

• An iPhone or iPad equipped with the most recent version of iOS

1. To begin, ensure that all hardware and software are up to date and running the latest version of Apple software.

2. Utilize the charging cord to connect your device to your computer. Your device will prompt you for the code to unlock the screen. Enter the security code and tap Trust Device.

3. iTunes should open automatically, and on the left-hand side, you should be able to select your device. When the pop-up window appears, select Restore iPhone and confirm that you want to proceed.

If you're performing these steps on a PC equipped with iTunes, you'll need to click on the Summary tab to access the Restore iPhone option.
