How To Find Out What Motherboard You Have

Are you planning to upgrade your laptop or PC? You've probably asked "What motherboard do I have?" Here's how to find out the motherboard.

While the hardware of your computer such as your RAM and graphics card are easy to identify in the summary of your system, things are not always as straightforward when it comes to your motherboard or other internal devices.

Depending on the type of motherboard you have and the operating system, there are a few more steps that are involved in this. But luckily it's still very easy enough even for a novice to learn.

Here's how you can quickly and easily answer the question: "What motherboard do I have?"

How To Use The Command Prompt To Check Your Motherboard

You can check your motherboard model and the serial number easily by using Windows Command Prompt.

1. On the Windows 10, select the "search" field in your taskbar,

2. Then type "cmd" and press "Enter".

Another method to open the Command Prompt is to use shortcut on keyboard

1. "Run shortcut Windows + R" by pressing down Windows key on your keyboard and press R together.

2. Then type "cmd" into the popup window, then press "Enter".

You will not bother or need to run the Command Prompt as an administrator. Once you open your command window, you can prompt Windows Management Interface Command (WMIC) to check the model, name, the manufacturer, and other of the features on your motherboard.

3. To do this, simply enter the following below directly into Command Prompt:

"wmic baseboard get product,manufacturer,version,serialnumber"

4. Remember to not include any spaces between modifiers like the product and manufacturer---only separating them with a comma.

How To Check Your Motherboard Model With The Windows System Information

The Windows System Information can also provide you with your motherboard details. However, this method is a hit-and-miss. It seems to be compatible with MSI and Gigabyte motherboards, but fails to identify details for motherboards from Dell, Razer, Asus, in our tests.

But if you will get do a compatible motherboard, this is the easiest way to check your motherboard model and the brand on Windows.

1. First, start up the Windows, press "Windows Key + R" on your keyboard

2. When the Run window opens, type in "msinfo32" and press "Enter".

This will open the overview of the Windows System Information.

The information of your motherboard should be specified next to the Baseboard Manufacturer, BaseBoard Product, and the BaseBoard Version. If the fields say that the information is not available, you should then use one of the other motherboard checking methods we have explained in this article.
