How To Record Your Screen Using VLC

VLC, Media Player.

You never know when you'll need to record a video of your desktop in the future. You might want to record video of a game that you enjoy playing or the process that must be followed to solve a problem. You don't need to download any additional software in order to record what's on your Windows screen, but you also have another option.

The multifunctional VLC Media Player video player has yet another hidden feature hidden away in its code. It does so without requiring the installation of any additional software on your computer. This is how it is supposed to work.

How to Record Your Screen Using VLC

1. To begin using VLC Media Player, go to the Start menu and perform a search for the program.

2. Select Convert/Save from the drop-down menu located in the toolbar's Media tab.

3. Make sure that the Capture Device tab is selected. In this section, use the drop-down menu to select Desktop as the Capture mode.

4. In the box labeled "Desired frame rate," type the frame rate that you want. The rate of 15 frames per second should be sufficient for basic screen captures. Try recording at 30 frames per second if you need the highest possible quality from your video. The recording will appear more smooth if the frame rate is increased; however, this will result in a larger file size.

5. To open the following dialogue box, select the Convert/Save button on the toolbar.

6. Choose a location to save the recording by clicking the Browse button that's located next to the box that's labeled Destination file.

7. After you have completed these steps, click the Start button to begin the recording. VLC will record whatever is displayed on the screen without displaying a notification that it is doing so.

8. Simply clicking the Stop button on the VLC interface will cause the recording to stop, and the file will be saved without further intervention. It will be there in the MP4 format that you specified earlier and it will be waiting there.

To create a short screen recording, that's really all that's required. VLC does not have the advanced features that are available in dedicated recorders, but it is easy to use when you are in a pinch. You will no longer need to use the camera on your phone in order to share what's currently displayed on your screen. OBS can record or stream whatever is happening on your computer screen, giving you additional options if you so desire.
