Tesla Activates In-Car Monitoring to Ensure Drivers Are Paying Attention

All Tesla vehicles have received a software update that activates the in-car camera above the rearview mirror to ensure drivers are paying attention while driving. This comes in the wake of several recent car accidents caused by drivers abusing the Autopilot feature.

Tesla's New Update Enables In-Car Monitoring

Tesla's latest software update enables the in-car camera, which helps ensure drivers remain alert while using Autopilot. Numerous Tesla drivers discovered the new software update and informed others via social media.

With the new software update, the in-car camera (located above the rearview mirror) can now monitor drivers who are using Autopilot.

While we do not yet understand the intricacies of Tesla's software, we do know that the camera will ensure drivers are paying attention to the road and surroundings while driving with Autopilot enabled.

In the last few months, we've seen a handful of Tesla accidents caused by drivers abusing the Autopilot feature, as well as numerous cases without accidents on social media. Tesla's new software update enables it to more effectively monitor drivers' attention while behind the wheel–even when Autopilot is enabled.

Drivers have abused the Autopilot feature by failing to pay attention to the road and, in some cases, by failing to sit in the driver's seat altogether. This is obviously extremely dangerous and should not be attempted; it is also against the law.

Previously, Tesla used a system that detected steering wheel pressure to ensure drivers were paying attention.

Due to the fact that some drivers have discovered ways to abuse this system, Tesla acted swiftly by enabling the in-car camera to prevent Autopilot abuse.

How Does Tesla's In-Car Camera Affect My Privacy?

It's understandable that some Tesla drivers may be concerned about their privacy–after all, there is now a camera monitoring everything you do in your car.

Tesla has stated, however, that no data leaves the car unless data sharing is enabled. Indeed, without this feature enabled, your Tesla cannot even save the data, let alone transmit it.

Further, it's possible that Tesla's software monitors only certain aspects of your driving, such as your gaze on the road. Tesla employees, after all, are uninterested in watching you eat a drive-thru meal in your car.

Tesla is likely to encourage users to enable data sharing in order for Tesla's software to learn and improve as a result of other users. However, for those who value their privacy, it's convenient to have the option to disable sharing.

Tesla Takes a Step Forward With Autopilot Safety

While Tesla's previous system for detecting steering wheel pressure was effective, we have seen how it can be abused. It's encouraging to see Tesla move quickly to implement this new Autopilot safety measure, which makes using the feature even safer.
