Most of the time individuals, especially women are seen as the ones who are depressed and this is not true as many men out there also have this problem. This is because mental health issues are not widely embraced in society especially for the male folk with attitudes associated with masculinity making the whole process challenging. In this article, I am going to lift the veil on this often masked struggle and give a bit of insight into how to help the men who suffer from it. 

The Unseen Epidemic 

Depression is a disease which touches millions of people globally, however, it is possible to meet different symptoms in different people. It however, becomes imperative to know that depression in the man does not manifest with the typical symptoms of daily crying or moodiness. It however, can involve complaining, getting angry, feeling excessively tired or withdrawing from previously favorite activities. This makes the depression in the males less easily detected by other people and the males themselves also fail to notice it easily.

The culture that is inculcated in boys from childhood is that of manliness, which entails denial of emotions, independence and apathy. These expectations can eliminate any perception of masculinity, and prevent a man from showing weakness and seeking support. The phrase “man up” and all that kind of rhetoric make men’s mental health a taboo and when one has it, he feels ashamed, and lonely for not being able to cope as society expected.

It will prove useful to teach boys and mens’ emotional literacy right from their pre-school age so that they can have healthier forms of managing their emotions. It can help to desensitize some of the aggressive tendencies associated with particular male role models in today’s society.

Mental health awareness campaigns and or discussions will go a long way in eradicating stigma and encouraging people to speak out. Zeroing down on the specific depictions of men with depression helps in destigmatizing the disease and make them discuss an issue freely.

Male depression is a multifaceted and a poorly disclosed condition to some extent owing to culture and prejudice. This shows that depression in men is a hidden problem that can be resolved with more awareness of how depression can manifest in men and by establishing cultures which are more empathetic.
