The European Union (EU) has postponed the rollout of its new Entry/Exit System (EES), initially scheduled to launch on November 10. This delay follows concerns raised by Germany, France, and the Netherlands regarding the readiness of their border computer systems. EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson confirmed the postponement, stating, “November 10 is no longer on the table,” and noted that no new timetable has been established. However, she mentioned that the possibility of a phased introduction of the system is under consideration.

The EES is designed to create a digital record that links travel documents to biometric data, thereby eliminating the need for manual passport stamps at the EU's external borders. Under the new system, non-EU citizens entering the Schengen Area would be required to register their fingerprints, provide a facial scan, and answer questions related to their stay. A spokesperson for the German interior ministry highlighted that the three countries involved—Germany, France, and the Netherlands—account for approximately 40 percent of the passenger traffic affected by the EES. They stated that the central system, managed by the EU agency EU-Lisa, lacks the necessary stability and functionality for a successful implementation. EU-Lisa is responsible for deploying large-scale IT systems within the EU, and its readiness is crucial for the EES to function as intended.

The French interior ministry echoed these sentiments, acknowledging the system's potential benefits but emphasizing the need for thorough preparation before its introduction. The Dutch government has yet to provide an official comment on the matter.
