Government Calls for Comprehensive Social Media Inquiry

The Australian federal government has announced its intention to establish a new parliamentary committee with the purpose of scrutinizing the practices of big tech companies. Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, Paul Fletcher, emphasized the importance of holding big tech accountable, saying, "Big tech created these platforms, they have a responsibility to ensure their users are safe. Big tech has big questions to answer." The Australian federal government has proposed the establishment of a Joint Parliamentary Select Committee to investigate the influence and impacts of social media on Australian society. The committee's primary goal is to promote transparency and accountability within social media companies, ensuring they are more responsible for their actions and the content they disseminate.
