Satara Tourist Places – Top & Best Attractions in Satara

Satara is located at a distance of 48 km from Panchgani, 54 km from Mahabaleshwar, 129 km from Pune. Situated near the confluence of the Krishna River, a tributary of the Venu River, Satara is one of the famous places to visit in Maharashtra during the monsoon season and one of the top places to visit near Pune.

The name of the city is derived from the seven mountains surrounding the place implying the seven (seven) and tara (hills). Satara is another popular tourist attraction that must be included in the Mahabaleshwar package.

After the Third Anglo-Maratha War, the British captured the region of Satara from the Marathas and handed it over to Raja Pratap Singh to oversee the maintenance of the city. Later Satara became a part of Bombay Presidency in 1848 AD and became a district of Maharashtra after India's independence. The land of Satara also served as one of the major centers of the Indian independence movement.

Satara district is lined with wonderful temples and forts. Ajinitara Fort is the major historical fort in Satara and was built by Raja Bhoja. About 3,000 feet high, the fort was once an important line of defense in southern Maharashtra. The fort consists of ancient temples i.e. Devi Mangalai, Lord Shankar and Lord Hanuman temples. Vasuta Fort, Sajangarh Fort and Kalyanad are other popular forts in Satara. Kas Lake, Kas Plateau, Vegad Falls, Gare Ganapati Temple, Koteshwar Temple and Abhyankar Vishnu Temple are some of the important places to visit in and around Satara. Kas pathar

At a distance of 24 km from Satara, 37 km from Mahabaleshwar and 50 km from Panchgani, the Kas Plateau, also known as Kas Pathar, is a vast volcanic lateral plateau located in the Satara district of Maharashtra. It comes under Sahyadri sub cluster and is one of the top places to visit near Satara.

Popularly known as the Flowers of the Plateau, Kas Plateau is one of the famous tourist attractions of Maharashtra and also a popular picnic spot among nature lovers during monsoons. The plateau is situated at an altitude of 1200 meters and is about 1,000 hectares in area. The name 'Kas' originates from the Kasa tree.

The Kas Plateau was formed by volcanic activities and is covered by a thin soil cover as a result of which, no vegetation grows in the region. Due to this, the flora and fauna of the area is quite unique. These unique ecological features make Kaas one of the biodiversity hotspots.

The plateau is known for its unique biosphere, high mountain plateau and grasslands. During the monsoon season, especially in the month of August, the plateau comes to life with a variety of flowers. Kas has over 850 different species of flowering plants, 624 of which are listed in the IUCN Red List. 

It is also a paradise for bird watchers, as many species of birds can be seen here. There is a wonderful lake called Kas Lake, which is situated on the south side of the plateau.

Kas Pathar attracts many tourists, scientists and nature lovers. To control potential damage from excessive tourism, the government has limited the number of visitors to 2,000 per day. It is a wonderful experience to walk through the flowers that cover the plateau.

The best time to visit Kas Pathar is from August to October. Many people tighten up during the rain; However, the plants bloom only in late August to September.

Thoseghar waterfall

At a distance of 26 km from Satara, Theseghar Falls is a popular waterfall located in Thegar village of Satara district of Maharashtra. It is one of the top waterfalls in Maharashtra and one of the most famous waterfalls in India. Thoseghar Falls is one of the most popular places to visit in Satara and one of the best monsoon tourist places near Mumbai. Thoseghar Waterfalls is a beautiful place situated on the edge of Konkan region. The waterfall falls through a series of cascades with a total height of about 500 metres. It is a seasonal waterfall which is seen only in monsoon and falls in a deep valley.

Weghar Falls is famous for its serenity, clams and serene natural surroundings. It is a wonderful place where one can enjoy the beauty of nature. There is a picnic area and a newly constructed platform which gives a nice view of the waterfall. There is no way to enter the falls but one can go to the starting point of the falls.

People visit the falls from all over Maharashtra, especially during the monsoon season between July and October.

Vajrai falls

At a distance of 28 km from Satara, Vajrai Falls is a picturesque waterfall located near Kas Flower Valley in Satara district. This is the most spectacular waterfall in Maharashtra and one of the top monsoon tourist places near Pune.

Vajrai Falls is a three-tiered waterfall falling from a height of 853 feet (260 m). It is a perennial spring but the water content is high during monsoon. People from different parts of Maharashtra come here in large numbers to witness the beautiful flow of the stream during monsoons. The birthplace of the Urmodi River is believed to start from the Vajrai Falls. There are many small caves near Vajrai Falls which can be seen along with the falls.

The waterfall is located near Bhambawali village in Satara district. Tourists can reach the waterfall from Satara bus stand by using personal vehicle or Alavadi bus.. There are a large number of leeches in this area. Swimming at the waterfall is prohibited due to the deep ponds.

Sajjangarh Fort

At a distance of 16 km from Satara, Sajjanagarh Fort is an ancient hill fort and a pilgrimage center near Satara in Maharashtra. 

The Sajjanagarh Fort was earlier known as Ashavalyangad and was built between 1347-1527 AD by the Bahamani emperors. It was later conquered by Adil Sha in the 16th century AD. In the same year the Mughals attacked the Sha rulers and took this fort under their control. Later it came under the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Previously known as Parli Fort, it was renamed as Sajjangarh after Shivaji Maharaj requested Shri Ramdas to establish his permanent residence here.

His teachings and works written in books like Dasbodh are still read and followed by many people in the state of Maharashtra. The fort is well known as the spiritual capital of the Maratha king Shivaji. The fort is situated at an altitude of 914 meters and has two main gates. 

Nagraj temple Satara

 Nataraja Temple is dedicated to Lord Nataraja, a manifestation of Lord Shiva performing the tadava dance. The foundation of the temple was laid on May 1981. Samanna, a resident of Satara, had gifted the land to build the temple. Funding was given by the state governments of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, while the wood needed for the entire construction of the temple was provided by the Kerala government.

Shri Uttara Chidambaram Temple was built by renowned sculpture artist Shri M.S. Ganpati Chhapati and his brother Shri M. Mathyya Stapathy. Similar to the Chidambaram temple in Tamil Nadu, the Nataraja temple has four large entrances on four sides.

Apart from the main temple of Lord Nataraja, other temples located in the temple complex are Ganapati Temple, Hanuman Temple, Radha-Krishna Temple, Shivling Temple, Navagraha Temple, Adi Shankaracharya Temple and Ayyappa Swamy Temple.

The temple is under the management of Kanchi Shankar Math. It attracts lakhs of devotees and pilgrims to worship Lord Shri Nataraja. A Veda is also being run by the Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam near the Patsala temple.
