Tech Hub Update: Genesis Sees CEO Departure, Edmonton Unlimited Welcomes New Leadership

Edmonton Unlimited has announced the appointment of Tom Viinikka as its new CEO, effective May 15, succeeding Launa Aspeslet. Aspeslet had assumed the interim CEO role following Catherine Warren’s departure in January, amid a broader restructuring of Edmonton Unlimited’s board of directors. Warren’s exit, framed as an ousting, underscores the organizational shift at Edmonton Unlimited. Dodd’s emphasis on the necessity for fresh leadership skills and experience signals the board’s commitment to driving the organization forward and achieving greater success in the community.

Viinikka’s selection followed a rigorous search across western Canada by a committee of the board, supported by an executive recruitment firm. With nearly two decades of experience spanning various industries, including technology, Viinikka brings a wealth of expertise to his new role. His previous leadership roles in executive, operational, ownership, investing, strategic advisory, and economic development capacities, notably as CEO of the Edmonton Screen Industries Office, underscore his suitability for the position. Viinikka expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with Edmonton Unlimited’s high-performing team and supporting innovative entrepreneurs in the local ecosystem.

Lauding Viinikka’s capabilities, Dodd expressed confidence in his ability to inspire the organization’s team and accelerate its vision. Meanwhile, in Newfoundland and Labrador, another leadership transition is underway as Genesis, a startup and innovation hub based in St. John’s, prepares to bid farewell to its president and CEO, Michelle Simms. 

Simms’s tenure at Genesis, spanning nearly two decades, underscores her deep commitment to fostering innovation and supporting startups in Newfoundland and Labrador. Assuming the role of president and CEO in 2016, she played a pivotal role in guiding the organization through various stages of growth and evolution. Her decision to depart in April reflects a desire to explore new opportunities while leaving behind a legacy of impactful leadership and dedication to the tech ecosystem in St. John’s.
