How to get Apple's WatchOS 8 public beta on your Apple Watch

Apple has begun rolling out the watchOS 8 public beta. This means that non-developers, such as public beta testers, can download and test the new update on their Apple Watch.

To obtain a beta version of Apple's next operating system update for your watch, you must enroll in Apple's beta testing program. Joining is completely free. After that, you must install the appropriate certificate from Apple's public beta website in order to download updates over the air. If you previously enrolled in Apple's beta program, you will need to re-enroll. What you need to know is as follows.

 

How to download and install the WatchOS 8 public beta on your Apple Watch

You can download and install watchOS 8 on your Apple Watch via the Apple public beta program. To assist you, we've listed the steps below. However, keep in mind that in order to use watchOS 8, you'll also need the iOS 15 public beta on your iPhone.

 

Register and enroll in Apple's public beta program

To download and install the watchOS 8 public beta on your Apple device, you must first register for and enroll in Apple's public beta program.

1. On an iPhone connected to your Apple Watch, visit the Apple Beta Program website.

2. Click the "Register" button.

3. Log in using your Apple ID credentials.

4. From there, read and agree to Apple's terms and conditions.

5. Access beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/guide from your iPhone.

  • You may be prompted to sign in using your Apple ID credentials.

6. Save the Beta Configuration Profile to your computer. (Follow the instructions on-screen.)

  • You must select the watchOS tab.
  • Scroll down to "you can enroll your Apple Watch" and click it.
  • Select Download Profile > Install on the subsequent page.
  • To restart your device, you may need to enter your passcode and tap Restart.

At this point, your Apple Watch is ready to install the public beta.

 

Install the WatchOS 8 public beta via Apple Watch

You can install the watchOS 8 public beta directly from your Apple Watch in a few simple steps:

1. In the Apple Watch's Settings app, navigate to General > Software Update.

2. Wait for the public beta prompt for watchOS 8 to appear.

3. Tap the download and installation prompts to download and install the beta on your device.

 

Install the WatchOS 8 public beta via iPhone

Alternatively, you can install the public beta of watchOS 8 via your iPhone:

1. Turn on Wi-Fi on your iPhone and launch the Apple Watch app.

2. Select My Watch > General > Software Update from the menu bar.

3. Select Download and Install and type in your iPhone's passcode.

4. Tick the box next to Agree to the Terms and Conditions.

5. Charge your Apple Watch to at least 50% and connect it to the charger.

6. On your iPhone and/or Apple Watch, tap Install.

 

Can your Apple Watch run the watchOS 8 public beta?

Apple stated that watchOS 8 requires an iPhone 6s or later running iOS 15 or later, as well as an Apple Watch model from the following list:

 

  • Apple Watch Series 3
  • Apple Watch Series 4
  • Apple Watch Series 5
  • Apple Watch SE
  • Apple Watch Series 6

 

When will WatchOS 8's final version be released?

Throughout the summer, Apple will seed several developer and public betas of watchOS 8, which will be available for download over the air. Expect the final version of the software update to be officially released this autumn for all supported Apple Watch models, most likely following the launch of the next iPhone series.
