How To Run A Diagnostic Scan To Checkmate Your Chromebook

People most times tend to use their computers longer than their other gadgets in life, which means it is a very important thing to keep an eye on the health of the device. Chromebooks have a handy “Diagnostics” app that makes this health care super easy to do.

The Diagnostics app was fully introduced in the Chrome OS 90 in the month of April 2020. It’s a huge upgrade over the previous method that will require you viewing an internal system page. There are also some very useful tests that you can use to be sure that everything is running fine.

How To Open The Diagnostics Apps

1. You will not find the Diagnostics app in the drawer launcher app, but we'll show you two other ways to launch it. First, choose the circle launcher icon that you see in the taskbar.

2. Click the launcher icon

3. Enter the search box or you can simply start typing “Diagnostics.” Choose the “Diagnostics” app when where you it appear in the results.

4. Search for diagnostics

5. Looking at the second method, just open the app from the Chrome OS Settings. Tap the clock icon in the taskbar and it will bring up the Quick Settings panel. Then, choose the gear icon to open the Settings menu.

6. Open Quick Settings and click the gear

7. Next, choose “About Chrome OS” in the Settings sidebar.

8. Select about chrome os

9. Now select “Diagnostics” to launch the app.

That’s all are to do to launch the Diagnostics app. Let’s look into what it can show you and do.

What Does the Diagnostics App Do?

The Diagnostics App is splited up into three sections:

1. Memory,

2. CPU, and

3. Battery.

Each one of these provides an overview of information and can run a health test.

The Battery Section

The “Battery” region shows the size of your device’s battery and informs you of how long you have left at your current battery level. Underneath that are 3 different metrics:

1. Battery Health: The batteries capacity can decline over time, meaning they will not stay charged as long. This number informs you of how “healthy” the battery is. You want to view a high number here.

2. Cycle Count: This is the number of times your Chromebook has gone through a full charging cycle—from the range of 0-100%.

3. Current: This is the rate at which the Chromebook is currently being either charged or discharged.

You’ll see an option to “Run Charge Test” or “Run Discharge Test,” it all depends on whether your Chromebook is plugged in. These tests will measure the rate at which your device is charged or discharged.

The CPU Section

Next is the “CPU” section. The CPU section shows information about your device’s processor at the top and you can also see a real-time graph of the usage of CPU underneath. There are three metrics here as also:

1. Current Usage: An aggregate percentage of the amount CPU is currently being used.

2. Temperature: This is the current temperature of the CPU.

3. Current Speed: This is how fast the CPU is currently running.

If you want to get more information, tap “Run CPU Test.” This will run a number of tests to certify that the CPU is running fine. You want to see the green “Success” messages here.

The Memory Section

1. The last section is the “Memory.” You'll see a blue progress bar showing how much of the total available memory is being used. Tap “Run Memory Test” to see some other additional details. Be aware that this test takes 15 minutes. Again, you need to see green “Success” message.

2. At the bottom of the page, you can tap the “MNM” button to get the overall readout of all the diagnostic data at this point in time.

That’s all about it! This is a little handy feature in the Chrome OS helping you to keep an eye on your device’s health and any troubleshoot issues if they should arise.
