How To Set up and Use the Microsoft Edge Kids Mode

It’s not always easy to give your kids dedicated devices that carries strict parental controls. If you want to leave your computer for a while, Microsoft Edge’s “Kids Mode” feature is a super handy. Let’s see more.

Like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge supports multiple profile of users. “Kids Mode” is essentially just one of the user profile in Microsoft Edge, but it has several features specifically created for making the web safer for kids.

For starters, the Kids Mode restricts many of the trackers that most websites use for targeted ads. It also defaults to Bing SafeSearch, which blocks anything involving 18+ text, images, and videos.

By default, Kids Mode has a limited access to around 70 popular, kid-focused websites. Parents have the ability to customize this list and then add their own favorites. If a kid tries to access a website outside of this list, Microsoft Edge will instantly block them.

The age range of Kids Mode are of two options: 5-8 or 9-12. The older group gets appropriate news feed on the New Tab Page, which gives articles from MSN for kids.

Lastly, Kids Mode supports so many fun browser themes for kids to choose from. And perhaps very importantly, parental authentication is required to leave the Kids Mode.

How To Start Kids Mode

1. Kids Mode is available on the Microsoft Edge for masOS and Windows 10. It only takes few clicks to launch. First, click your profile icon that is located at the top-right corner of the window.

7. Select an age range

Note: You don't have to do this every time you launch Kids Mode—unless you choose to (more on that later).

Kids Mode will open in fullscreen to keep the kid from leaving. Moving the cursor to the top of the screen will reveal the tabs and the address bar. There are some kids’ websites added to the New Tab Page shortcuts by default. You or your kid can customize the theme in the top-right corner side of the New Tab Page.

There are so many things that you can do as a parent to customize your Kids Mode experience.

1. To access these settings, click the three-dot menu icon located at the top-right corner of the browser window and select “Settings.”

2. Go to the Edge settings

3. From the Settings page, navigate to the “Family” section.

4. Select the Family section

Here’s where you can change the age range of Kids Mode. If you have multiple kids, you may want Edge to always enquire the age range to use when starting Kids Mode.

5. Always ask to choose age range

6. Next, click on the “Manage Allowed Sites in Kids Mode” button to customize the approved websites.

7. Manage allowed websites

This is all you need to do! Kids Mode is a handy feature that gives your kids their own safe environment in Microsoft Edge. You don’t have to worry (as much) about them accessing your stuffs or getting to see something that they shouldn’t. As always, though, a little adult supervision is needed.
