How To View Your Storage Device Icons on Your Mac Desktop
The Mac Desktop is known to be your virtual workspace in the Apple's OS X. It is the beginning point for all of the work (and play) you do on your desktop.
If you’re a fan of working from your desktop on your Mac, you might have been enjoying veiwing icons for removeable drives, hard disks, the optical media, and also network shares directly on the desktop itself. They can come in handy shortcuts. If you want to enable this feature, we have prepared this article for you to learn how to enable it.
Here is a way on how you can enable them.
1. To view the drive icons on your desktop, you will need to make a change in the Finder’s preferences. Focus on the Finder by tapping its icon in your dock.
2. Tap on the "Finder" icon in your Dock. In the menu bar at the top of your screen, tap “Finder” and then choose “Preferences” from the menu, or you can also press "Command+Comma" on your keyboard it will select the Preference.
3. After tapping the "Finder" in the menu bar then selecting "Preferences," when the Finder Preferences opens, just tap on the “General” tab and then locate the “Show these items on the desktop” section. Here is what the enabled options mean:
The External disks: A removable storage devices, also including the USB flash drives.
The Connected servers: It involves network Sharing or drives that your Mac is currently connected to.
The DVDs, CDs, and iPods: These are Optical media that you have inserted into a drive ( that is if your Mac has one) and iPods that are connected to the Mac.
The Hard disks: These are storage devices that are installed in your Mac, such as the hard drives and SSDs.
4. Now you can place check marks beside each of the item category that you’d like to see display on your desktop.
5. In the Finder Preferences, tap "General." Then you can place a check marks beside the items you would like to display on your desktop.
6. Next, close the Finder Preferences. If you have any of these devices that are connected to your computers, you should already see icons for them displayed on your desktop. If you do not see any display on your desktop, you can try them out by plugging in a USB drive, and connecting to a network drive, or by inserting a CD. You can use a simple example of drives visible on your Mac desktop.
7. If you later had a change of mind and you want to clean up your desktop, you can just open the Finder Preferences again (remember you can use this short cut code "Command+Comma") and all you need to do is uncheck any drives that you no longer want to see on the desktop display. Remember that your drives can still be accessible in the Finder sidebar even if they are not visible on the desktop.
