Nigeria’s Flutterwave unveiled as Basketball Africa League sponsor

The Basketball Africa League (BAL) announced on Monday that Flutterwave will be one of the league's 2021 sponsors. The league was founded in 2019 and its inaugural season was scheduled to begin on March 13, 2020.

It was, however, postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. About a month ago, on March 29, league officials announced that the league's inaugural season will begin on May 16 and run through May 30. It is sponsored by nine companies from nine different countries.

Flutterwave, Nike, Air Jordan, Pepsi, Rwand Air, Wilson, New Fortress Energy, Hennessy, and the French Development Agency are among the companies (AFD). Nike and Air Jordan are both in the athletic footwear and apparel business, whereas Pepsi and Hennessy are beverage companies.

Wilson is an American manufacturer of sports equipment, and New Fortress Energy is a leader in the clean energy sector. The AFD is a public financial institution based in France with operations in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and other regions of the world.

The only African companies listed as sponsors are Flutterwave and Rwand Air. Rwand Air is a Rwandan airline that provides aviation services. Flutterwave is the only technology company on the list, having been founded in 2016 by Iyinoluwa Aboyeji and Olugbenga Agboola.

Although teams from 32 African countries competed in the qualifying tournaments for the inaugural season, only Nigeria and Rwanda have a sponsor for the season.

Flutterwave's Chief Commercial Officer, Ifeoluwa Orioke, stated in a statement, "As a lifelong basketball fan, I am excited to partner with the BAL as it begins its inaugural season."

The partnership between the recently named most influential company in Time Magazine and the BAL is multi-year, which means it will extend beyond this season.

In Conclusion

Amadou Gallo Fall, the League's president, acknowledged that technology "is critical to basketball and to our ability to make our content and products accessible and convenient for fans to consume."

According to him, the partnership also demonstrates BAL's desire to participate in industries that will shape Africa's economic growth, foster entrepreneurship, and bolster the continent's global standing.
