The Power of Figma as a Design Tool

Figma design tool.

What is Figma?

Figma is a cloud-based computer graphic design tool that is very similar to the Sketch software in both functionalities and features, but with very big differences that make Figma is very good for team collaboration. For those that are skeptical of such claims, this post would be explaining how Figma simplifies the design process and is more effective than other software design programs at helping designers and teams work together very well.

Why is Figma a great design tool

There are lots of reasons why a great number of graphic designers consider Figma a great design tool, and below are some of them are:

1. Figma Works on Any Platform: Figma works on any operating system that runs a web browser. Mac os, Windows laptop, Linux machines, and even Chromebooks can be used with the Figma software. It is the only graphic design tool of its type that can do this, and in other shops that use hardware running different operating systems, everyone can still share, open, and edit Figma files.

2. Collaboration in Figma Is Simple and Familiar: Because Figma is browser-based, teams can collaborate as they would in Google Docs. People viewing and editing a file are shown at the top of the app as circular avatars. Each person also has a named cursor, so tracking who is doing what is easy.

3. Figma Uses Slack for Team Communication: Figma uses Slack as its communication channel. When a channel of Figma is created in Slack, any comments or design edits that are made in Figma are “slacked” to the team directly. This functionality is very important when developing life because changes to a file in Figma will also update every other instance where the file is embedded ( this is a potential headache for developers). Changes that are made to a mockup, both warranted or not, are immediately brought out, and the feedback channel is live.

4. Figma Sharing Is both Uncomplicated and Flexible: Figma also allows for a permission-based sharing of any file, page, or frame (known as an artboard in design tools). When a sharable link is created and attached to a frame on a page, the person that would click on that link will open up a browser version of Figma, and a zoomed-in view of the frame would then be loaded.

5. Embedded Figma Files Provide Real-time Updating: Figma also lets you share live embed code snippets to paste an iFrame in third-party tools. For example, if Confluence is used to display embedded mockup files, those files are not “updated” by saving a Figma file those embedded files ARE the Figma file.

Figma is a browser-based UI and UX graphic design application, that comes with an excellent design, prototyping, and code-generation tools. It is currently (and arguably) the industry’s leading interface design tool, that has very robust features that support teams who are working on every phase of the design process. If you haven’t already, I recommend that you try it.
