YCombinator launches a platform similar to Tinder that connects startup founders with desired co-founders

Y Combinator (YC), a seed funding startup accelerator, announced the launch of its Co-founder Matching Platform on Tuesday. It will be available to startup founders worldwide via Startup School, YC's free online program and community for entrepreneurs.

Consider how people use Trueflutter, Tinder, and other online dating apps to search for and occasionally find love. The way YC's platform works is very similar to how dating apps work, except that the goal is to find a business partner rather than a romantic partner.

How YCombinator’s co-founder matching works

The first step for anyone interested in recruiting a co-founder on the platform is to register for the program. After that, you'll create a co-founder matching profile that will be reviewed by a Startup School team. The profile will include information about the interests and skills you desire in a co-founder, as well as the location in which he or she should reside.

Once the profile is accepted, YC generates profiles of candidates who closely match the profile of the co-founder you're looking for. When the founder discovers the profile of a potential co-founder, he or she can send the individual a message. If the candidate accepts the message, YC proceeds to match the two of them.

According to the accelerator, “the co-founder matching platform is optimized for rapid review, increasing the likelihood that you will find the right fit.”

Typically, the founder will conduct multiple video calls to ascertain whether the prospective co-founder is a good fit. Typically, the duo confers more than twice before making a decision. They also collaborate on a time-limited trial project with clearly defined expectations and goals to ascertain the co-founder’s compatibility.

Building a startup is difficult, and having a co-founder can increase the likelihood of success. Within YC's startup school, 20% of active founders are looking for a co-founder, while another 25% of aspiring founders say that the lack of a co-founder is preventing them from starting their company full-time.

Prior to yesterday's announcement of the accelerator, the platform had been in an undisclosed beta phase for an undisclosed number of months. According to YC, the platform has matched 9,000 founders. By making the platform available to founders from all over the world, they will have an easier time selecting co-founders.
