However, we all met in the Nishitetsu Grand Hotel, where we stayed the first night. We went to the hotel's Fukuoka Rotary Club's lunch meeting and were warmly welcomed - this is Hisa's Club.

I talked, and the crew introduced themselves - the film was excellent, and I now have a sizable collection of Club flags. They transported our belongings by truck, and we boarded a fast train to Kitakyushu City. The incoming team leader, Kenji Ogawa, lives here. We were afterward welcomed into the City Mayor's Office, where we heard that Kitakyushu-City is a major industrial city in Japan, with steel mills and a well-known port, and historic castles.

Monica was motivated by queries about a new homeless shelter that had recently opened, and Antonio was intrigued by the prospect of a new airport arriving shortly. We also learned from a board of education representative that Japan's educational paradigm has evolved. Instead of teaching knowledge, they are now much more concerned with teaching how to use knowledge.

We all needed a pick-me-up, and Starbucks was the place to be right now. We went through the city's central streets, past stores, and shopping arcades, across the bridge - the city is lovely - and back to the Station Hotel, where the Kokura East Rotary Club meets for supper.

This was a boisterous group, perhaps because they stood for the whole meeting, as was Kenji's Club. Oh, and neither of these clubs has any women or speak English. We've all found new host families, and Kenji and I take a cab to his house.

Monica and Antonio joined us, and we all dressed up in jackets, white gloves, glasses, hard hats, and microphones to tour the blast furnace and steel production facility.

It is an incredible experience to visit a steel plant if you have never done so. Massive furnaces to heat the raw material to terrifying degrees - neon red rivers of ore leaving the large furnace - rail cars were accepting the liquid material (and how do they ever get all the stuff in a steel mill put together??). We went into the next plant, which was loud and sophisticated. We discovered that the carbon was being removed from the pig iron to manufacture steel in one of only two furnaces (the U.S. Steel plant in Alabama has the other one). As new liquid steel was transferred to molds, big buckets swung from the ceiling, making you feel small in a steel plant.

Antonio said it seemed like we were in the Terminator movie. We had lunch at the Kokura West Lunch Club. Report: no women, little English, and not the kind of fun we have in our Club (not much difference in men's Rotary Clubs around Japan).

In the afternoon, we visited Antonio's - he had been attracted by this company since the beginning of the trip - TOTO, which manufactures toilets and bathroom fittings (with 18,000 employees worldwide) (like Koller). TOTO trades on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under the symbol toto.

He says that Rotary needs to do something here because it's full of older men with older attitudes and no expression on their faces - Ken is amusing when he imitates this - and we both laughed. He will fit perfectly in with our Club and will not want to leave because he has a mental image of this type of Club as the life that Rotary requires.

 Although our hosts today do not doubt that Rotary is economically powerful, I believe that our main concern is that it continues to inspire people and acquire membership in the future due to our experiences in our Clubs.
