Boeing has announced its support for Quebec’s new Aerospace Innovation Zone by investing $240 million CAD

The Government of Québec is taking proactive steps to cultivate innovation and collaboration within the aerospace industry by launching its fourth innovation zone, Espace Aéro. This strategic initiative aims to bring together key players and industry leaders in the aerospace sector, fostering a conducive environment for the exchange of ideas, technological advancements, and collaborative projects.

By creating a dedicated space for innovation and cooperation, Québec is positioning itself as a hub for aerospace excellence, driving forward progress and growth in this critical industry. Through Espace Aéro, the government is not only facilitating networking and knowledge-sharing among industry stakeholders but also paving the way for groundbreaking developments and advancements that will propel Québec's aerospace sector to new heights of success and competitiveness on a global scale.

The aerospace innovation zone established by the province is accompanied by a significant planned investment of $415 million, with a specific mandate to prioritize development in decarbonization, aircraft autonomy, and safety. The province has committed $85 million towards the project, while the private sector has contributed $300 million, demonstrating a strong partnership between government and industry stakeholders.

Aviation industry leader Boeing is set to play a pivotal role in the funding of the project, contributing a substantial $240 million towards its total funding. This significant investment from Boeing will be allocated across three key areas, with a notable portion of $110 million earmarked for the establishment of an aerospace development center within the innovation zone.

This dedicated center will serve as a hub for cutting-edge aerospace research and development initiatives, focusing on key areas such as decarbonization, electrification, autonomy, digitalization, and advanced materials. By allocating resources towards the creation of this specialized facility, Boeing is demonstrating its commitment to driving innovation and technological advancements in the aerospace sector, while also supporting the province's strategic goals of fostering sustainability and advancement in aviation technology.

Pierre Fitzgibbon, Québec's Minister of the Economy, Innovation, and Energy, highlighted the unique position of Quebec as the only location in the world where the three largest aircraft manufacturers - Bombardier, Airbus, and Boeing - are present. In a statement, Minister Fitzgibbon emphasized the significance of the new Espace Aéro zone in bolstering the aerospace industry in Quebec.

He noted that the establishment of this innovation zone will not only attract significant investments but also drive innovation and cultivate new talent to address the evolving challenges in the aviation sector. Under the guidance of the Aéro Montréal innovation cluster, the innovation zone project will encompass three hubs strategically located across Montréal and its surrounding areas of Longueuil and Mirabel. This distributed approach aims to leverage the unique strengths and resources of each region, fostering collaboration and synergy among industry stakeholders and research institutions.

By establishing hubs in key aerospace hubs, the project seeks to create a dynamic ecosystem that promotes innovation, knowledge-sharing, and technological advancements in the aerospace sector. Through this multi-hub model, the innovation zone project is poised to drive growth and development in Quebec's aerospace industry, positioning the province as a hub of excellence and innovation in the global aviation landscape.

The Longueuil center will serve as a hub for collaboration among various aerospace schools, aimed at bolstering an aerospace training and research infrastructure project. This initiative is designed to support the development of skilled talent and foster innovation within the aerospace industry. On the other hand, the Mirabel cluster will provide a testing environment conducive to large-scale experimentation and simulations of autonomous and drone technologies.

This specialized facility will enable industry players to test and refine cutting-edge technologies in a controlled environment. Lastly, Montréal will be home to the flagship Collaborative Center for Innovation in Aerospace and Mobility, serving as a focal point for collaborative research, development, and innovation in the aerospace and mobility sectors. By strategically distributing these centers across different locations, the innovation zone project aims to harness the unique strengths of each region and drive forward progress in aerospace technology and innovation.
