Training Portal Overhaul: Laing O’Rourke Implements SAP Low-Code Tool

business .

Laing O'Rourke, a prominent construction firm, has recognized the necessity for a comprehensive overhaul of its internal training resources due to previous shortcomings in structure and purpose. Helen Fraser, the Director of People in Australia, characterized the earlier training environment as being akin to a house filled with various types of furniture scattered haphazardly, which made it difficult for employees to access and utilize these resources effectively. This lack of organization not only hindered employee development but also meant that the company could not maximize the potential of its training programs.

In this chaotic setup, some training resources were comparable to "designer furniture," which only a select group of top talent had the privilege to use. In contrast, other resources, such as LinkedIn Learning, were described as "common commodity furniture" available to everyone but lacked the engagement necessary for effective learning. This situation left many employees feeling disconnected from valuable training opportunities, as they were uncertain about the condition, relevance, or even the availability of the resources at their disposal.

To address these challenges and create a more effective training environment, Laing O'Rourke has developed a centralized platform known as LOR Learn. This innovative portal has been built using SAP's low-code tool, Build Work Zone, and serves as a comprehensive resource for approximately 700 employees across the organization. LOR Learn is designed to provide personalized and role-based learning modules, which are crucial for employees' career development and skill enhancement.

The construction sector, known for its high-pressure environment, faces immense challenges related to project delivery and safety. Fraser emphasized the difficulty of finding time for learning amid the demands of daily operations. The introduction of LOR Learn has created a "single, big front door" for all learning resources, streamlining access and improving visibility. This centralized approach allows employees to easily navigate the platform, which is equipped with a clear layout that guides them to various training options available to them.

Historically, Laing O'Rourke's training budget was allocated to only a limited number of employees—about 80 staff members—resulting in a narrow reach of its educational initiatives. With the launch of LOR Learn, the firm has dramatically expanded its training investment, now allocating 10 percent of the budget to support the learning of the 700 users on the platform. This significant increase in accessibility ensures that a broader range of employees can benefit from professional development opportunities.

LOR Learn features an impressive array of 55 bespoke learning pathways, along with 350 custom assets designed to engage employees effectively. The content has been crafted to resemble the engaging formats found on popular social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, which helps to capture the attention of users and promotes a more dynamic learning experience. Additionally, the platform fosters a culture of peer-to-peer learning and social networking, further enriching the educational environment.

Moreover, LOR Learn is equipped with robust tracking and reporting metrics, allowing Laing O'Rourke's human resources teams to monitor progress and effectiveness. These metrics enable the HR department to provide regular updates to the board, ensuring accountability and transparency in training initiatives. This comprehensive approach not only aims to enhance employee skills and knowledge but also fosters a culture of continuous learning within the organization. By ensuring that all employees have access to valuable resources for their professional growth, Laing O'Rourke is positioning itself as a forward-thinking leader in the construction industry, committed to developing its workforce in an ever-evolving sector.
