Amazon Setting Up African Headquarters In South Africa

The City of Cape Town has approved the R4 billion River Club mixed-use development, which will house Amazon's new Africa headquarters.

The development's design aims to create a 150,000-square-metre mixed-use space divided into two precincts for commercial and residential uses. The developer intends to use the entire 31,900 square meters for residential purposes.

According to the city, the development will include both market-rate and affordable housing options, the latter of which will be physically integrated into the apartment complexes' other residential units.

5,239 jobs are expected to be created during the construction phase alone. Also, the project will generate up to 19,000 indirect and induced jobs, the company stated.

Design and Development Stages

Various other stages of development include the following:

1. 59,600 square meters of office space;

2. 20,700 square meters of retail space;

3. Hotel with an area of 8,200 square meters;

4. 4100-square-meter gymnasium;

5. Restaurants, a conferencing center, a school, and a space for events

6. The developer has stated that 20% of residential floor space will be reserved for affordable housing.

7. Amazon, the world's largest retailer, will be the anchor tenant, establishing a base of operations on the African continent.

Comments and Projections

“The planned mixed-use development will provide a significant boost to the Cape Town economy and people in the aftermath of the national Covid-19 lockdown,” city mayor Dan Plato said.

“It is clear that this development will benefit the area economically, socially, and environmentally. We are committed to promoting investment in order to revitalize the economy, which is only now beginning to recover from the effects of Covid-19,” Plato stated.

Plato explained that while the development has been approved as a concept, conditions have been attached that require the developer to submit detailed plans for various development aspects.

The development is planned in phases, with construction expected to take three to five years.

Precinct 1: is a mixed-use development with approximately 60,000 square meters of floor space.

Precinct 2: will house Amazon's headquarters, which will cover an area of 70,000 square meters.
