As Apple Rolls out iOS 14.5, Here are the 5 Most Interesting New Features to Expect
Apple has released its latest iOS 14.5 operating system, including several new features not included in previous versions. iPadOS 14.5 is also available, and both operating systems are currently being rolled out to users.
The latest iOS 14 update introduced new features such as the smart widget stack, which appeared at different times of the day based on their frequency of use. Picture-in-picture functionality was also included in the iOS 14 update, allowing users to facetime without leaving the app in which they are currently working.
iOS 14.5 expands on these features, adding the ability to view Apple Fitness Plus workouts on a TV via AirPlay 2, as well as support for the latest video game controllers for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Additionally, it allows users to specify whether they want Siri to speak as a female or male. The following are the five most noteworthy updates.
Siri can now be male or female
Unlike in the past, Siri now lacks a default voice. When users configure their device, they can now select the voice to speak to them and specify whether it should be male or female. The voice options are more varied and natural sounding.
When the phone is paired with AirPods or other compatible headphones, Siri can now announce incoming calls and contact emergency contacts if the iPhone owner requires assistance but cannot make a call.
Users now control which companies can track their activities on apps
The update includes a new feature called Transparency for App Tracking (ATT). This feature enables apps to obtain the user's permission before tracking their data across third-party apps or websites. Companies such as Facebook use data tracking to serve advertisements or to share user data with data brokers.
With the ATT, apps will prompt users for permission, which they can grant or deny. iPhone users will be able to view which apps have requested permission to track them and make changes to their settings at any time.
Send real-time updates on Apple Maps
Apple Maps also got a number of tune-ups. Users can now report or clear hazards, automobile crashes, traffic jams, and other incidents that other road users should be aware of while using the map. This "Report an Issue" feature is only available in the United States and China for the time being.
Siri can be contacted via the map to inquire about the speed limits along the route being taken. These features are already available on Waze, a navigation app for Android users.
Like Google Maps and Waze, Apple Maps now allows users to share their routes and estimated time of arrival (ETA) with friends and family so that their location can be tracked. This can be used to notify friends and family of the iPhone user's anticipated arrival time.
Alert! New emojis with more skin tones are on the block
To promote inclusivity, the couple kissing emoji and couple with heart emoji now come in various skin tones. Users from Africa and other regions can now choose their preferred skin tone.
Additionally, new emojis have been added. Among them are characters for a face exhaling, a face with spiral eyes, a face in clouds, a heart on fire, a mending heart, and a woman with a beard.
iPhone can be unlocked with Apple Watch
Covid-19 protocols mean that more people wear face masks for long periods during the day. There will be instances when an iPhone must be unlocked via Face Unlock, which the iOS 14.5 update addresses.
Users can now unlock their iPhones using their Apple Watch when attempting to use Face ID while wearing a face mask. The Apple Watch must be worn on the wrist, unlocked, and close to the iPhone for this to work.
The owner can simply glance at his or her iPhone and the Apple Watch will provide haptic feedback indicating that the phone has been unlocked. This new feature is compatible with the iPhone X and subsequent models and the Apple Watch Series 3 and subsequent models. The watch is compatible with watchOS 7.4, which is included in the new software updates.
