Google launches technology programmes to support Africa’s small retail businesses

Today, Google launches a series of programs that will run throughout June and will not only help small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) grow and recover in Africa's post-COVID economy, but will also help them thrive.

SMBs account for approximately 90% of all businesses on the continent, forming the economic backbone. While these businesses employ approximately 80% of the region's workforce, the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions on business activity have had a significant impact on them and the livelihoods of millions over the last year and continue to do so.

Mojolaoluwa Aderemi-Makinde, Google's head of brand and reputation for Africa, explains, "As more consumers begin their search for products and services online, we want to do more to assist retail small businesses in digitizing and leveraging online tools for growth." One thing we do know for certain is that when small businesses recover, African economies thrive, benefiting everyone”.

Activities For International Business Launch

Google has planned the following activities for International Small Business Month:

• The launch of a new Google for Small Businesses portal to assist small businesses in obtaining the resources and guidance necessary to get online and grow.

• A webinar series aimed at assisting small businesses in utilizing digital tools to connect with and grow their customer base. SMBs can register for complimentary webinars on June 9, 16, and 23 at goo.gl/smbwebinars.

• Shop Small Fridays – a social media video series that highlights and celebrates small businesses throughout the continent. Those interested in following the #ShopSmallFriday series on Twitter can do so via our Google Africa account.

Google For Small Business

The Google for Small Business portal was created to serve as a one-stop shop for small businesses looking to get online and grow their digital presence, assisting them in selecting the right tools for online success and achieving their business goals.

“This portal is dedicated to assisting businesses in going online. In a competitive business environment, digital technology enables economic growth and job creation while also providing critical services to Africans,” Aderemi-Makinde continues.

This announcement comes less than a year after Google committed to assisting over 500, 000 businesses, job seekers, and vulnerable individuals through support packages that include free business tools, training, and grants.

These programs demonstrate Google's ongoing commitment to ensuring that small retail businesses on the continent have the tools and skills necessary to recover from the pandemic's impact and re-energize the continent's economy.
